In The Vampire Diaries, 'Caroline' marries the love of her life, 'Stefan Salvatore'. Meanwhile, in The Originals, a spin-off of TVD, 'Josh's soul finds peace with his star-crossed lover, 'Aiden'. However, it seems that in real life, these two characters of the TVD Universe found themselves in a unique crossover. Candice King, who played 'Caroline, and Steven Krueger, who portrayed 'Josh', are engaged in real life and expecting their first baby. Here's everything to know about their love story.
Candice King and Steven Krueger were seen spending time together after her divorce from her then-husband, Joe King
Candice Accola and musician, Joe King had started dating in 2012, and tied the knot in 2014. They share two daughters, Florence and Josephine. However, after seven years of marriage, the duo called it quits and divorced in 2022. As per reports, Candice had cited 'irreconcilable differences' as the reason for their divorce. How exactly Candice met her next romantic partner, Steven, is not clear yet. But in 2023, they were spotted together at TVD universe fan conventions and cast reunions.
For the unversed, Candice was part of the main cast of The Vampire Diaries. Steven, on the other hand, was an integral part of The Originals, which is set in the same story universe. Candice, as 'Caroline', had made a few cameo appearances in The Originals, where her paths might have crossed with Steven. The cast of both these shows also gathered together often for fan meetups and reunions. Hence, although the start of their love story isn't made public, it could be assumed that they met for the first time due to their TVD universe shows.
In fact, Steven Kruger had shared a photo of a cast dinner with Us Weekly back in April 2023. The actor had been candid about how the costars of both shows would meet whenever they had the slightest opportunity. Even though it isn't known whether Steven and Candice were dating at the time, in the snap, the duo can be seen sitting beside each other, cozied up. Talking about the cast's meetups, Steven had shared:
"We’ve all moved on to new projects, but we still jump at the opportunity to catch up any chance we get."

Candice King and Steven Krueger made their relationship official
Candice first opened up about being in a relationship in her Superbloom podcast in November 2023. The actress revealed that she had started dating after her divorce, but wasn't seeing multiple people. Candice shared that she was dating just one person. She also said that the relationship was putting a smile on her face. The actress was quoted as saying:
"I've been dating. I am going to say that out loud. That feels very personal and new and interesting and super cool and casual to say out loud. But I have. Not multiple people — only one. And I don’t even want to get into it. This is not brand new. This is the most you are going to hear me talk about it. It is good. There’s a smile on my face and joy in my heart.”
In a post wrapping up her 2023, Candice shared many clips from the year. One of them also showed her and Steven sharing a kiss. After this official confirmation, the couple went on to showcase many of their romantic moments on social media. Candice also shared glimpses of Steven and her daughters spending time together while she was away, filming for the show, We Were Liars.
Candice King and Steven Krueger got engaged earlier in 2025, and are now expecting a baby
In May 2025, Candice shared that on the occasion of her 38th birthday, Steven gave her the best gift. He asked the actress to marry him. She said yes to him, of course. Then, on December 8, 2025, Candice made another major announcement about her life. The actress is expecting her first baby with fiance, Steven. Talking to People, Candice also shared that she surprised her two daughters, whom she shares with her ex-husband, by telling them they would soon be older sisters. Along with preparing to welcome their baby, Candice and Steven are also looking forward to their wedding. The actress said:
"My social media algorithm immediately turned into a full-on pregnancy algorithm because all I was searching was how to surprise friends and family. We surprised our family when we were all together having a belated engagement celebration. We handed out Save the Dates, but instead of them being for our wedding, it was to meet Baby Krueger."
