Caroline Flack left the world shocked when she announced she would step down as Love Island host in 2019. She has cited the 'allegations' as the reason behind her decision, saying that she doesn't want her personal affairs to distract viewers from the series. However, unfortunately, two months later, the British TV presenter tragically died by s**cide at the age of 40.

What happened to Caroline Flack?

According to the Poplar Coroner's Court, Caroline Flack died by s**cide in 2020. The autopsy report later revealed the cause of death as "one by suspension by ligature." It was Coroner's officer, Sandra Polson, who confirmed the news to PEOPLE in February 2020. It was revealed that while the paramedics and the medical team tried to revive the TV host, their attempts were in vain. During an interview with The Independent, Hassell revealed:

"In spite of the fact she may have led to some charmed life, actually, the more famous she got, the more some of these difficulties increased — she had to deal with the media in a way most of us don't."

Caroline Flack passed away on February 15, 2025. However, the months leading up to her death were filled with controversies. Especially with her then-boyfriend, Lewis Burton, accusing her of assaulting her. Caroline Flack: Search for the Truth claimed that during the December 2019 incident, the TV host saw a text from another woman on Burton's phone. However, when she woke him up to confront him, she hit her with the phone, leading to him suffering a minor head injury, according to the police. 

According to the docuseries, while the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) initially didn't want to charge Flack, a report on the incident stated that "the injured party does not support the allegation". However, a police detective with the Metropolitan Police appealed that decision, and she was charged with assault later that month. Nonetheless, Burton denied that Flack had hit him and claimed that he was "gutted" at his inability to protect her.

Caroline Flack's close friends were concerned about her mental state

Ahead of her highly publicised court appearance, where Caroline Flack was supposed to plead 'not guilty', her friends and loved ones expressed concerns about her mental state. Her friend, Molliw Grosberg, recalled the night before her court date during Caroline Flack: Search for the Truth and shared that the host had "drank the minibar dry" and "took whatever tablets" were in her hotel room. Recalling how she even had to force Flack to vomit, Grosberg stated:

"[Flack] called a couple of people slurring, and I knew then, something was going on. So a couple of us went over, and she was just completely out of it on the bed. We were just freaking out because the next day was the hearing, but also, I was thinking she's going to die."

Where did Caroline Flack die?

Caroline Flack died in her apartment in Stoke Newington, London. It was later revealed in several reports that the paramedics had been called to the British host's home the night before she died. She underwent a clinical assessment and was deemed fit to be left at home. However, that assessment fell through, as the very next day, she had bid farewell to the world at the age of 40. The spokesperson later commented on the tragedy and stated:

"Crews attended and, following a clinical assessment, the person was not taken to the hospital. Due to patient confidentiality, we cannot comment further."

How did the public react to Caroline Flack's death, and why did Hulu decide to make a docuseries on her demise years later?

Caroline Flack's death was met with sadness and outrage, with many, including her family, calling it a "devastating and preventable injustice". During the coroner's ruling in 2020, Flack's mother and twin sister testified to the court that they believed she had been treated unfairly by CPS due to her celebrity status. However, after a series of investigations by CPS and London's Metropolitan Police, which concluded in March 2020, that "the case was handled appropriately" by all agencies involved.

However, the question now is: why the series — and why now? According to reports, the intention behind the series is not to answer 'why' she died, but to give the viewers 'how' she died. And most importantly, it was something Flack wanted. According to Christian Collerton and producer Spohie Clayton-Payne, the TV host reached out to her, wanting to make a documentary series to clear her name. They told Vanity Fair:

"Before Caroline passed, she spoke with Curious Films about a documentary series and wanted it to focus on clearing her name and reputation. We know she wanted her story told and her voice heard. I felt reassured by that —by Caroline's wanting this story told—and that it had to be authentic for it to really carry any weight."
