“When I saw (her) the first time, I felt something and she told me later that she heard bells and saw lights and all that stuff you normally see in movies. Some person had told her that you are going to meet this guy and you are going to fall in love with him. Maybe it was just a coincidence, so it happened.”
Vikram belongs to a Tamil-speaking family from Chennai, whereas Shailaja is a Malayali who hailed from Thalassery, Kerala. During that time, inter-faith marriages were taboo, but the couple fought all odds. They got married in Guruvayoor Temple in 1992 and also had a low-key Christian wedding. In an interview with Ranveer Allahbadia, Vikram spoke about his inter-faith marriage with Shailaja and said:
“Today, you can have live-ins, but then, it was considered taboo to even talk to a girl, and somebody who’s not… I’m half Hindu half Christian, and she’s Malayali, there’s all of that happening. But I’m glad I met her, and I’m glad she’s there… After I got married, it’s always been my wife.”
Vikram is a leading actor in the South Indian film industry, his wife, Shailaja, on the other hand, works as a psychology teacher at a leading Chennai school. Just like their respective professions, Vikram and Shailaja are completely opposite each other, and that is one of the most charming elements of their relationship.
Vikram and Shailaja are proud parents to two children, Akshita and Dhruv. Their daughter prefers to maintain a low profile and is married to Manu Ranjith, great-grandson of former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, M. Karunanidhi. On the other hand, Vikram’s son, Dhruv, chose to follow in his father’s footsteps and made his acting debut in 2019 with the film, Adithya Varma, a remake of the Telugu film, Arjun Reddy.
