Chris Canty found himself dealing with a long and stressful travel day, this time far away from the football field. The former Super Bowl winner shared how he, his wife, Melanie Richards, and their 12-week-old son got stuck on a plane for hours. The flight from Newark to Chicago never took off, and the situation became stressful fast. With a newborn involved and their luggage locked away, Canty took to social media to call out the airline and explain what really happened.

Chris Canty and Melanie Richards are now in a new phase of their lives together. The couple got married in July 2022 at the Chicago Cultural Center after first connecting on the dating app, Bumble. Over time, their relationship grew stronger, leading them to start a family. They have mostly kept their personal life private, choosing to share only a few moments publicly.
In January, 2026, Canty introduced their son, Odell, during an episode of his ESPN show, Unsportsmanlike. He shared that both mother and baby were doing well and opened up about how special the moment felt for him. He described the experience of becoming a father as one of the best feelings, showing a softer side away from his football career. He also gave small glimpses of how life has changed at home since the baby arrived. Those early weeks, as he explained, have been full of new emotions and learning every single day.

Chris Canty and Melanie Richards set out on their journey, but a normal flight soon turned into a long delay for Chris Canty and his family. The flight kept getting delayed, and passengers were even asked to get off the plane more than once. Through all this, Canty and Melanie Richards were trying to manage their 12-week-old son, Odell. He expressed his frustration directly to the airline and wrote:
“Do better @united…. You held me, my wife and newborn hostage on a plane scheduled to fly from Newark to Chicago for 8 hours. Plane didn’t take off. Had to de board twice. And now you won’t give us our luggage so we can tap out and go home.”

The situation became even more difficult when their luggage was not returned. Their bags had important items, including the baby’s car seat. Without it, leaving the airport safely was not possible. When someone online suggested they could just collect the bags the next day, on March 31, 2026, Canty made it clear that was not realistic with a newborn.
The delay alone was exhausting, but the luggage problem added another layer. Canty explained that travelling with a newborn is already challenging. Not having access to essentials made it worse. The car seat being checked in meant they could not simply leave and figure things out later. He responded to a user and explained that picking up luggage the next day does not work when you have a baby and need everything immediately.
After going back and forth with the airline online, things finally moved. Canty later shared a short update that the situation was resolved and his family made it home safely. He also hinted that the delay took a toll on the entire family, especially with such a young baby in their arms. The long wait and confusion made the whole experience more draining than expected. “I got my luggage and I’m back home so…. There’s that,” he wrote, showing relief after a long day.

Before becoming a media voice, Chris Canty built a strong career in football. After playing college football at the University of Virginia, he entered the NFL in 2005 when the Dallas Cowboys picked him in the fourth round of the draft. Over 11 seasons, he played for the Cowboys, the New York Giants, and the Baltimore Ravens. His biggest career highlight came when he won the Super Bowl with the New York Giants in 2012.
After retiring, Canty moved into broadcasting and now works with ESPN, where he shares his views on the game and current players. Even though his football days are behind him, moments like this recent travel issue show a different side of his life. This time, it was not about wins or losses, but about handling a tough situation with his family and making sure they got home safely. Chris Canty and Melanie Richards continue building a strong life together as partners and new parents.
