Cop-Turned-Artist Could Not Afford A Single Photo With Mother Once, Built Her A Photo Studio

A professional artist, photographer, and a former cop, B.S. Shivaraju wears many hats and is known as Cop Shiva in the artistic circles. In addition to this, he is a great son who has made his mother proud by fulfilling a very special wish of hers, which she never vocally requested. Shiva and his mother never got the opportunity to take a photo together when he was young. Now, decades later, the photographer not only made a special studio and took photos with his mother, but he also exhibited these photographs to the world.

Cop Shiva recalls coming back from a photo studio with his mother, since they did not have enough money

Cop Shiva and his mother, Gowramma, had once visited a photo studio with his grandfather, the artist revealed in an interview with Vogue. Excited to get their photo taken together, the mother and son had happily gotten ready in front of the mirror of the old photo studio. However, Shiva heartbreakingly revealed that his grandfather took him out of the studio and told him they did not have enough money to get their photo taken. Talking about this incident, he said:

“As I was getting ready, my grandfather returned, held my hand and silently took me out of the studio. He told me we couldn’t afford to get our photograph taken. The studio owner wasn’t able to do it with the money we had.”

After many years, Cop Shiva made a photo studio and fulfilled his and Gowramma's dream of taking a photo together

Documenting life and taking pictures wasn't as easy back then as it is today. And Cop Shiva's family could not afford a camera either. For many years, the son felt the lack of a photo with his mother, as he saw other people's homes decorated with lovely family photos. After that, Shiva joined the Karnataka Police Department in 2001, and by 2010, he had become a full-time photographer. A few years after professionally working as a photographer, Cop Shiva took matters into his own hands and fulfilled the dream with his mother, which they had been unable to do many years ago. The mother and son finally took a photo in a studio. But this moment was even more special since the studio was made by Shiva.

Cop Shiva's photo series with his mother is known as No Longer A Memory

Cop Shiva created an old-school and kitschy photo studio, which evokes the nostalgia of those times when getting one's photos taken in a studio was an event in itself, with each camera roll being priceless. The photos are hilarious, endearing and strangely aesthetic at the same time. Like older studios, the background is composed of different clothes, hand-painted with bright scenery. In one photo, the mother and son have donned bright colour suits and are carrying the older box-TV sets on their heads. This photo reminisces about the time when, as a kid, the artist had said that he would steal a TV from their rich neighbour for his mother.

In another photo, the mother and son duo wear pastel-coloured suits and pose in front of a beige-toned floral background while sitting on a Royal Enfield bike. In another amusing photo, Shiva and his mother are wearing ordinary household clothes but are bedecked in jewellery from head-to-toe, complete with crowns on their heads. The photographer revealed that along with creating a photo album with his mother, the photos also provide metaphors and social commentaries. The series also presents the artist's experiences while growing up in a fun and engaging way.
