Crazy Rich Asians was released in 2018 and became a global hit, with its depiction of an Asian family with their lavish lifestyle, luxury outfits, expensive weddings and most importantly, lots and lots of family drama. The film also showed a sweet love story between the main leads, 'Rachel' and 'Nick', played by Constance Wu and Henry Golding. Fans loved their chemistry and wanted to see the duo on screen again.
After the Crazy Rich Asians TV show was announced back in April 2025, people became more excited about a potential sequel to the movie. Also, the film was based on the first book written by Kevin Kwan in his Crazy Rich Asians series, which has a total of three books. There is also good news for fans, as the cast and crew involved in the film have given some positive updates about the sequel.
Crazy Rich Asians was a romantic comedy-drama movie directed by Jon M. Chu and released in 2018. The film had an all Asian- American starcast that included Constance Wu, Henry Golding, Michelle Yeoh and more. The original budget of the movie was USD 30 Million, and it became a blockbuster hit with a whopping USD 239 Million in earnings. The story depicts a gorgeous couple, 'Rachel' and 'Nick' who travelled to Singapore to attend a wedding and make the lady meet her boyfriend's family. Except, 'Nick' has not revealed to his girlfriend that he is 'crazy rich'.
In Deadline's Crew Call podcast, director of the film, Jon M. Chu revealed the reason why there has not been a lot of development into the sequel of Crazy Rich Asians. He said that he won't bring the busy star cast back unless the film is completely worth it. And since the first movie was such a success, there are a lot of expectations from fans, and a lot is on the line for everybody. Talking about his own expectations from Crazy Rich Asians 2, Jon Chu stated:
"I want the best thing. I want it to be worthy of what Crazy Rich Asians 1 was. We’ve tried all different versions. It’s hard because people think the first movie is like the book, but it actually is not. It’s the right spirit, but the plotting is very different. And so, you can’t just go and translate. And we’ve tried versions and the fact is, is that we just haven’t gotten there. And there’s no way I’m dragging the audience back. There’s no way. The bar is too high. So, in time when we get there, we will."
Spoiler alert for those who have yet to watch Crazy Rich Asians, at the end of the first film, 'Nick' proposes to 'Rachel' with his mother's blessings even though she disapproved of his girlfriend initially. In the book series, on which the film is based, the next book is called China Rich Girlfriend. The book depicted the wedding preparations of 'Rachel' and 'Nick', along with their family. As 'Rachel' tries to search for her biological father before the wedding, many shocking secrets of the past are revealed.

Kevin Kwan, the writer on whose books the story is based, in an interview with GMA, said that the success of the movie made all the cast and crew members very busy with more and more work. Michelle Yeoh, who played the main antagonist role as the mother of 'Nick', won an Oscar for her movie Everything Everywhere All At Once. The director and the main leads also became busy with new projects. Talking about the newfound popularity and the busy schedules of the stars, Kevin Kwan said:
"The amazing great thing is that everyone got so busy. It blew up the careers of Jon Chu and all the actors. Michelle won an Oscar. So they have to do a few amazing victory laps. But I think now everyone's ready to get back and make Crazy Rich Asians 2."
When the Crazy Rich Asians TV series was announced, many people thought that it would replace the second and third books and that the rest of the story would be told through the series. However, Jon Chu has revealed that the show will tell stories of other characters that play a significant part in the books. The films will primarily focus on the lives of 'Rachel' and 'Nick'. Talking to Entertainment Tonight, the director of the film revealed about the TV show and said:
"We’re working on it (sequel). But we’re working on a Max show as well with some of the other stories as it goes along. I won’t say too much, but there are things that are moving."
Michelle Yeoh, who played the role of 'Eleanor Young' in the film, became one of the most memorable characters with her portrayal of the snobby, rich Asian mother. In the Kering Group's 2023 Women in Motion Talk, the actress said that since the film crew already made such a huge success with the first film, they are trying to find out how they can make Crazy Rich Asians 2 even better. She said that the author, Kevin Kwan has endless stories and that there will be 'other things'. But for now, the filmmaker and the storyteller are trying to find the right story.
