Daniel Naroditsky, also known as Danya, was a famous American chess grandmaster. He was only 18 years old, when he earned the title of 'Grandmaster'. Apart from being chess grandmaster, Daniel was also known as a streamer on the platforms like Twitch and YouTube. He also wore the hats author, commentator, and content creator. However, it was on October 19, 2025, when Daniel's death was announced, which came as a shock to his fans and well-wishers. Daniel was only 29 years old, when he passed away, and people have been digging information about what was the cause behind Daniel's death.
For the unversed, Daniel Naroditsky's demise was confirmed by his family's statement, which was shared by Charlotte-based chess club, Charlotte Chess Center, wherein he was a member. In the statement, no extensive details about Daniel Naroditsky's death was shared. The family asked for privacy in this testing times. The chess player's cause of death was not publicly disclosed, and nothing has been shared about what actually happened.
However, the chess Grandmaster's death has come under the scanner for several reasons, and one of them is that as per Danya's fans, the chess Grandmaster's behaviour seemed to be a bit strange during his last streaming. Apart from being a chess professional, streamer, Daniel was also a chess commentator and people loved listening to him. However, as per his fans during his last streaming, he seemed to have a 'mental break'. Fans who have watched his last streaming revealed that it was visible that he had a 'mental break'. A user said that Daniel's eyes were wide while he even spoke incoherently. As per the user:
"He was indeed having a bit of a mental break it seems. His jaw was rocking back and forth and his eyes were super wide while he spoke noticeably incoherently, sometimes in Russian. I was really worried since watching it. Some also claimed that his body was found by the Ukrainian chess player, Olexandr Bortnyk."
While the speculations and concerns surrounding Daniel's death are already rife, it was Russian GM Vladimir Kramnik who suggested that there could be 'foul play'. He shared screenshot of a chat with a chess fan, where the latter spoke about Danya's stream and mentioned that it looked that the chess grandmaster was on serious drugs. Sharing the screenshot, Vladimir expressed his concerns while requesting for proper investigation in this case. Well, his explosive post on Daniel's death sparked a controversy yet again, which was intensified due to the past feud between him and Daniel.
It was last year when a major conflict happened between Daniel and Vladimir. Vladimir Kramnik accused online players of cheating, as he felt that blitz and bullet games online were too accurate to be true. While he initially didn't name Daniel, he later said that chess Grandmaster's performances looked suspicious. The comments didn't go down well with Daniel, who called Vladimir's behaviour 'worse than the dirt'. Vladimir then offered Daniel to play a high-stakes match, betting USD 50,000, which the latter didn't accept, and continued to defend himself in the public.

While some criticised Vladimir's allegations without any hard evidence, FIDE also said that the approach that Vladimir took seemed harmful and could affect innocent players. While the actual reason of Daniel's death is yet to be disclosed, the comments from fans along with Vladimir's post were the reason that it has come under the scanner.
