Dara Singh Got Married At The Age Of 14, Fell In Love With Mumtaz, Blamed Bollywood For Breakup

Deedar Singh Randhawa, popularly known as Dara Singh, is a name that needs no introduction. The man who rose to fame for his role as 'Hanuman' in Ramanand Sagar’s show, Ramayan, had won many hearts with his performance. Apart from being an actor, Dara Singh was also a world champion wrestler who wrestled until the age of 55.

Dara Singh made his Bollywood debut with the film, Sangdil in 1952. He proved his versatility as an actor in films like Main Maa Punjab Dee, Guru Gobind Singh, Qahar, Zulmi, Hudd Kar Di, Kal Ho Naa Ho and others. Despite being a wrestler, Dara was soft at heart and once fell in love with actress, Mumtaz. However, their love was short-lived.

Dara Singh fell in love with Mumtaz during the filming of 'Faulad'

Dara Singh crossed paths with Mumtaz when the producers of his second film, Faulad, were looking for an actress to cast opposite him. Even when Dara’s previous film did well, none of the leading actresses agreed to work with him in Faulad. During that time, Mumtaz was doing some minor roles in films and agreed to work with Dara.

Dara Singh and Mumtaz had worked together in the film, Faulad, which was released at the box office in 1963. And ever since they started working in the film, there had been rumours about them being in love. They would spend time together during the shooting and soon became the talk of the town.

Dara Singh blamed Bollywood for his breakup with Mumtaz

Mumtaz was not a renowned actress at that time and was only seen in minor roles. However, after the release of Faulad, Mumtaz gained immense fame in Bollywood and started getting numerous work opportunities. Due to her busy schedule, she could hardly meet Dara. The gap between Dara and Mumtaz led to their breakup. The breakup shattered Dara, and he once said:

“Bollywood snatched Mumtaz from me.”

Dara Singh first got married at the age of 14

Dara Singh first got married at the age of 14, which was arranged by his family. He first married Bachno Kaur in 1937. After ten years of marriage, they parted ways, and he married Surjit Kaur in 1961. Soon after their marriage, they hopped on to parenthood and welcomed three sons and three daughters.

Born and raised in a family of farmers, Dara Singh developed a love for wrestling and frequently participated in non-professional wrestling events in his village. Widely regarded as Rustam-e-Hind, he played nearly 500 fights in his career. Among them, he defeated Australian wrestler, King Kong in 1956 and world champion, Lou Thesz in 1968. 

Dara Singh joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 1998 and became the first person from the sports category to be nominated as a member of the Rajya Sabha. He remained a Rajya Sabha MP from 2003 to 2009. He had also been the president of the All India Jat Samaj and the Bombay Jat Samaj. In 2012, the wrestler-turned-actor Dara Singh, went to his heavenly abode after suffering a cardiac arrest.
