Actress, Dee Freeman, best known for her recent role as 'Valerie Barnes' on Tyler Perry's Sistas, died on April 2, 2026, at the age of 66. Her family confirmed her passing, noting that she died peacefully after a "brave and fearless" battle with a serious ailment. Before her acting career, Dee served for six years as a Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps. After her service, she worked as a radio DJ in Japan before transitioning to television and film. As the multifaceted individual passed away quietly, her fans expressed curiosity about the cause of her death. Here's everything we know about the same.

What is Dee Freeman's cause of death?

Dee Freeman was suffering from stage 4 lung cancer for a while, and after a courageous fight against it, she finally succumbed to the fatal disease. Dee was open about her health struggles and occasionally updated her fans on her condition. She even once wrote on Instagram, "I've never felt defeated. There have been some tough days ("2 rounds of chemo down... YUCK!..."). The veteran star passed away in the presence of her family, who shared the tragic news with the world on April 3, 2026 through a poignant Instagram post. They wrote:

"On behalf of her family, it is with deepest sadness that we share this update with you. Dee passed away peacefully on April 2, 2026 after a brave and fearless fight with cancer."

The bereaved family expressed "deepest sadness" as they deal with the tough time. They thanked the people who stayed by Dee Freeman's side during her cancer treatment. They also mentioned the actress was overwhelmed by knowing that so many people wished her well and prayed for her recovery. The post could be read as:

"Thank you to everyone who supported Dee during her battle. It blew her away to know how many people cared about her and were pulling for her. We know Dee is up there in heaven being the force of nature she always was. Now she's doing it with her angel wings on. Rest in peace, Dee."

Dee Freeman sought financial help to pay for her treatment

Dee Freeman revealed her lung cancer details to her fans in October 2025. She asked them to contribute to her GoFundMe, to help her pay for the "whopping medical expenses" which are not covered by her insurance. Dee shared that she pursued both western and alternative treatments, for which drained her finances. She humbly stated, "Whether your donation is big or small, every cent helps." Teb actress also called on casting directors and loop groups to offer her work, even if it was just for "one or two liners." She stated that she needed the money for her medical insurance.

Despite her illness, Dee Freeman continued to work, making her debut on Sistas in late 2025. Her publicist noted that she showed up with courage and dignity even while facing health challenges. She shared that Muhammad Ali is her favourite boxer of all time, and she wanted to channel his fighting spirit and "knock this lung out." Dee thanked everyone who was willing to help her out in their own little way.
