Deepika Padukone's Bad Diction Irked Filmmaker, Farah Khan Who Dubbed Her Voice For 'Om Shanti Om'

Deepika Padukone is one of the most loved actresses in Tinseltown at the moment. She is unanimously identified as a queen by her fans, who has been mesmerised with all her films and performances so far. From her gorgeous looks, bold personality to her charismatic nature, the diva never leaves a moment to enthral everyone. For the unversed, despite being a complete outsider to the film industry, it was back in 2007 when she left everyone awestruck with her debut film, Om Shanti Om, opposite Shah Rukh Khan.

In a previous interview with Komal Nahta, Farah Khan retrospected about launching such a brilliant actor, Deepika Padukone in the film, Om Shanti Om. The filmmaker remarked that she came across the actress on a commercial advertisement she did for the beverage brand, Fanta. Farah was quite sure on the very first look that Deepika was destined to be an actress. Narrating how she then approached the actress for a film, because she resembled a lot with Hema Malini, Farah Khan said:

“I had seen her in a Fanta ad and I thought then that this girl is going to be a heroine,” she said. “I spoke to her and I said I am making Happy New Year. I said I’ll test you and if you are good I’ll cast you opposite Shah Rukh. If you are not good, I will take you with Zayed. I wanted someone who could look like that era’s Hema Malini. I found that quality in her.”

Farah Khan had to dub Deepika Padukone’s voice due to her poor diction

Moving further in the conversation, Farah Khan revealed that although Deepika Padukone perfectly fitted the requirements for portraying the look of an actress from yesteryear era in the film, she severely lacked in proper diction. While her expressions were on point, her bad diction and dialogue delivery led the filmmaker to get her voice dubbed by some other actress. Moreover, Farah highlighted that despite all the training Deepika was put through, she wasn’t taking things seriously. In her words:

“Her diction was bad but when she did songs, her face would light up. She was very expressive with songs. Everything else was sync sound but her voice was dubbed. She was doing diction classes, not very seriously. But she was doing dance class, diction class, Anupam Kher’s acting school. I enrolled her in everything. We were properly training her.”

Well, there is no doubt that Deepika Padukone made an unparalleled debut with the film, Om Shanti Om, that simply helmed her to incomparable fame and stardom. Previously, in an interaction with Rajdeep Sardesai, Deepika looked back at her debut with such a massive film opposite none other than Shah Rukh Khan. Remarking how it changed her life overnight, the actress stated:

“Om Shanti Om put me on the map. It changed my life overnight. When I left Mumbai for the world premiere, people viewed me very differently. The minute I landed at immigration, I realised my life had changed. It was a combination of being at the right place at the right time, talent, hardwork, dedication and sacrifices.”

Previously, Farah Khan graced Bharti Singh and Haarsh Limbachiyya’s on their LOL Podcast, wherein she reacted on the constant nepotism debate that prevails in the film industry. Talking more about it, Farah simply slammed the entire concept of nepotism, as she revealed having launched a complete outsider, Deepika Padukone, who is a rising global icon at the moment. In her words:

“Tabhi maine nepotism ki baat ki thi, aaj 16 saal ho gaye Om Shanti Om ko. Nepotism ki baat chidhi thi.”
