'Detective Ujjwalan' OTT Release: When And Where To Watch Dhyan Sreenivasan's Quirky Detective Film?

Dhyan Sreenivasan’s comedy mystery thriller, Detective Ujjwalan, has finally entered the OTT universe. The Malayalam-language thriller, directed by debutant filmmakers Rahul G and Indraneel Gopeekrishnan, hit the theatres on May 23, 2025, and had a modest run at the box office. Dhyan Sreenivasan’s Malayalam-language mystery comedy thriller, Detective Ujjwalan, is currently available for streaming exclusively on Netflix, starting July 11, 2025. Taking to their official Instagram handle, Netflix India South confirmed the release on July 10, 2025, with a caption that can be read as:

“With the combined powers of Sherlock Holmes, Agatha Christie and Sethurama Iyer, this case will get solved. Watch Detective Ujjwalan, now on Netflix in Malayalam.”

For now, the film is only available for streaming in the Malayalam language, and no information is available on whether other Indian languages will be added in the future. This could be a limitation for non-Malayalam viewers, but given the film’s dedicated audience due to its genre and unique universe, it has found a dedicated audience. For the unversed, this film marks the second chapter of the Weekend Cinematic Universe (WCU), first introduced in actor Tovino Thomas’ superhero hit from 2021, Minnal Murali.

Detective Ujjwalan (2025) is the latest addition to the WCU, a shared universe that follows grounded yet innovative takes on various genres, often characterised with a touch of lighthearted humour. The film follows the story of a small-time village detective named ‘Ujjwalan’ (played by Dhyan Sreenivasan), who is known for solving petty crimes in the small, sleepy village of 'Plaachikkaavu'. However, the village’s routine life is disrupted with the arrival of a mysterious outsider who triggers a series of disturbing events. What started as harmless village pranks turns into sinister crimes, and ‘Ujjwalan’ finds himself entangled in a psychological cat-and-mouse chase.

In essence, the story is rooted in local flavour and comedy, as expected from WCU movies. However, as the mystery thickens, it takes a darker turn, hinting at a looming threat to the lives of Ujjwalan’s small village. What ultimately left viewers waiting for the next instalment was the way the plot of Detective Ujjwalan got tied into the border universe of Thomas’ Minnal Murali with a massive twist.

Detective Ujjwalan was reportedly made with a modest budget of Rs. 4.5 crore, and following its theatrical run, the film managed to turn in a considerable profit, with a net box office collection of Rs. 6.5 crore (Rs. 7.67 crore gross). Given Netflix’s selective choice of Malayalam films, Detective Ujjwalan likely found its place on the OTT platform due to its dedicated fan base for Minnal Murali. Critics and audiences have offered a mixed bag of reactions. While many appreciated the film’s light-hearted tone and Sreenivasan's performance. A review from OTTplay can be read as:

“The intriguing plot makes up for the few emotional scenes that don’t quite land. For fans of investigative thrillers with a funny twist, it’s definitely entertaining.”
