Over the generations, we have seen some serious talent in the Hindi film industry. While every actor has their own style and aura, some icons are undoubtedly a notch higher than others. One such cinema legend was Dharamdev Pishorimal Anand, popularly known as Dev Anand, who is still regarded by many as the best actor Hindi cinema has ever seen. Whether we talk about the way he carried his success, style, and stardom throughout his life or the way he treated his female co-stars, Dev Anand is clearly the only actor in Hindi cinema's history with zero haters.
The legendary actor, Dev Anand had also received the prestigious Padma Bhushan in 2001 and Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2002. In a career spanning over six decades, Dev Anand had worked with some of the biggest filmmakers of all time and had given so many memorable movies. Even to this very day, most of his films have passed the test of time, as they're still quite relatable to the current generation of cinema enthusiasts.
Some of the most notable films in which he had worked are the likes of Jewel Thief, Guide, Paying Guest, Johny Mera Naam, Nau Do Gyarah, Des Pardes, Solwah Saal, C.I.D., Tere Ghar Ke Samne, Hare Ram Hare Krishna, Tere Mere Sapne, Taxi Driver, and many more.
Once in an interview with a leading newspaper, Dev Anand's close associate, Mohan Churiwala recalled one of the most memorable incidents of his life while working with the iconic actor. The associate recalled the time when Dev Anand was shooting for his filmmaker-brother, Chetan Anand's film, Taxi Driver. It was during a break in the filming of Taxi Driver when Dev Anand got married to his co-star, Kalpana Kartik, and left everyone stunned. However, apart from this memorable and much-known fact about Dev Anand, another memorable incident happened during this iconic film's shoot.
Recalling an incident when Dev Anand was mistaken for a cab driver, Mohan stated that Dev Anand was shooting with his brother, Chetan Anand, in Bombay. In a particular sequence, the iconic actor was supposed to stop his car outside the famous Taj Palace Hotel to pick up his co-star, Sheila Ramani, who was playing the character of a club dancer in the film. During the sequence, when Dev Anand stopped his car outside the famous hotel, a foreigner crashed into his car, as the actor was playing the character of a cab driver. However, once he got inside the cab, Dev Anand told him that he is shooting for a film.
Further in the revelation, Mohan Churiwala shared how the foreigner didn't believe in Dev Anand's words, and it became quite a task for the talented actor to make him believe that he was just playing a cab driver's role. The foreigner was in a hurry, which was why he kept insisting Dev Anand to start his cab immediately until the film's director, Chetan Anand, interrupted the matter. Finally, the director and other crew members of the film made the foreigner understand that they were shooting a movie outside the Taj Mahal Hotel.
At the interview's end, Mohan Churiwala shared that once the confusion was cleared, the foreigner immediately apologised to Dev Anand. The associate admitted that it had become a memorable memory for the entire cast and crew of the film, Taxi Driver. Whether we talk about this incident or the fact that Dev Anand got married to his co-star, Kalpana Kartik, during the shooting of this film, Taxi Driver will forever remain a special film of Dev Anand's illustrious career.
After two years of Dev Anand and Kalpana Kartik's wedding, the couple welcomed a baby boy, Suneil. The actress left her acting after that film and spent all her time parenting her kids, Suneil and Devina Anand. It was on December 3, 2011, when Dev Anand had passed away due to a cardiac arrest at the age of 88. If the reports are to be believed, Kalpana Kartik is still living with her family and is of 91 years. The iconic actress has been living a low-key life since she bid farewell to Hindi cinema in 1957.
No doubt, we will keep witnessing incredibly talented actors and superstars, but will we ever see a star as humble, respectable, admirable, and talented as Dev Anand? Well, that's the question where even the most prominent critics choke.
