The Ambanis have been counted among one of the richest business families in India for a long time now. The massive family, that was headed by Dhirubhai Ambani has wide-ranging branches through its extended families, nearly everyone of whom is associated in one way or the other with the business world, and particularly so, with their homegrown Reliance Industries. However, did you know that one of Dhirubhai’s sister and her family has been an impeccable part of the Reliance group of industries? Well then, lets have a look at it.
To begin with, Dhirubhai Ambani was born to a school master, Hirachand Gordhanbhai and his wife, Jamnaben Ambani. Apart from Dhirubhai, the couple was blessed with four children, Trilochana Ben, Ramaniklal Ambani, Jasuben and Natubhai. Dhirubhai was preceded by his elder sister, Trilochana, who went onto play an indirect yet crucial part in the Reliance Industries. Mukesh Ambani, the current torchbearer of the Reliance Group has proved his mettle in the art of business making quite successfully, much like his father, Dhirubhai Ambani. Nevertheless, even after achieving so much heights, he has never forgotten to be humble and always respected his beginnings. For instance, in one of his earlier interviews with Rediff, Mukesh had recalled his early staggering stages in the business and had heaped praises on his first boss and cousin, Shri Rasiklal Meswani for guiding him correctly. For the unversed, Rasiklal is the son of Mukesh’s aunt and Dhirubhai’s sister, Trilochana Ben. He had mentioned:
“This was in 1981. Rasikbhai Meswani, Nikhil and Hital's father, was my first boss. The management style used to be very open. We could walk into each other's cabin, join in a meeting or get involved in any discussion. My father encouraged it. But when I joined Reliance formally, he said you need to have a boss and I was put under Rasikbhai's charge. He was running our polyester business, which consisted of importing polyester fibre, texturising it and selling it to textile mills. It was a new business compared to our own textile mill at Naroda (near Ahmedabad) that brought in almost 60%-70% of the profits.”
