Dia Mirza reveals she and her son nearly died before her delivery

Dia Mirza tied the knot with Vaibhav Rekhi in 2021 and welcomed her son in the same year. However, things were not smooth, as Avyaan was born prematurely and had been kept in the ICU for two months. Dia Mirza recently sat down for an interview with the Official People Of India. She revealed that she had undergone an appendix surgery in the fifth month of her pregnancy. After a month, doctors found that her placenta was haemorrhaging. Consequently, her body was going into sepsis, and if her baby wasn't delivered, it could have claimed both their lives. Recalling the terrifying situation, she said:

"I developed an acute bacterial infection, which could have been a side effect of my appendix surgery that I underwent during the fifth month of my pregnancy. By the end of my sixth month, we realised that my placenta was hemorrhaging and my body was going into sepsis. If the baby wasn't delivered, neither of us could be saved. It was quite scary."

Dia Mirza recalled one specific memory from the time she was being laid in the backseat of her car and was rushed to the hospital for treatment. The actress, who was in a life-threatening situation, had made only one plea to her gynecologist to save her baby, and he asked her to trust him. The doctor fulfilled his job, and her son, Avyaan, was born prematurely. He was immediately taken to the ICU with a mere weight of 810 grams, which is significantly less for a newborn baby. On the other hand, she was put on antibiotics.

Dia Mirza reveals her son underwent life-threatening surgeries right after birth

In the same conversation, Dia Mirza opened up about how her premature delivery didn't end their challenges. Just 48 hours after her delivery, it was concluded that the bacteria in her body was life-threatening. Meanwhile, little Avyaan had a hole in his intestine. To heal that situation, which would have been another challenging complication, he underwent a life surgery just 36 hours after his birth. The doctors pulled out the intestines from his body and had put a stoma. Recalling how she could only visit him for a limited time, Dia stated:

"I was allowed to visit him only twice a week; I could not hold him until he weighed 2.5 kg. I brought him home for exactly 20 days, and no nurse was willing to touch him because it was a really terrifying visual. So, I handled the dressing. After he became 3.5 kg, he underwent another surgery that lasted 3–4 hours, and the stoma was corrected."
