Diljit Dosanjh Shares Shakira's Wardrobe Mishap Delayed His Met Gala Entry, 'Knew We'd Be Late'

Punjabi singer and actor, Diljit Dosanjh, made headlines with his royal Met Gala debut a few days ago, creating history in a regal Punjabi ensemble. After turning heads with his presence, the singer-actor spilt some behind-the-scenes tea from the big day. In a recently released vlog on his YouTube channel, the Chamkila actor cheekily revealed how a last-minute fashion mishap, involving none other than Shakira, caused him to be late to his biggest fashion night.

Diljit Dosanjh blames Shakira’s wardrobe malfunction for his delayed entry at the Met Gala

Diljit Dosanjh shared a behind-the-scenes vlog of his Met Gala debut on May 5, 2025. The 13-minute video documented his journey from gym sessions to final fittings. Just before he stepped out in his Maharaja Bhupinder Singh-inspired look, chaos unfolded next door, as Shakira's dress zipper broke, causing a wardrobe emergency. The unexpected mishap delayed their red carpet plans. Citing the pop icon’s famous 2006 hit, Hips Don’t Lie, Diljit jokingly remarked:

"Shakira ki emergency ki wajah se sada kaam suffer hogaya. But it is okay. Hips don’t lie, and she doesn’t lie (laughs)."

Diljit and Shakira, both of whom were dressed in Prabal Gurung ensembles, were reportedly scheduled to pose together, but the wardrobe malfunction pushed everything back. As his team waited for the green signal to leave the hotel, Diljit shared that they were not being taken to the main area, possibly because of Shakira’s clothing mishap. He said in the vlog:

“They are not taking us to the main area, all the action is happening at the backstage itself. Takes us to the stage. I guess the zipper of Shakira’s broke, that’s why we are late. (chuckling) I knew we’d be late because of Shakira.”

The 2025 Met Gala’s theme was “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style”, which celebrated Black menswear artistry and dandyism, exploring the role of clothing and style in shaping diasporic identities. Paying homage to his country and the Punjabi cultural heritage, Diljit represented Sikh and Punjabi identity at the exhibition. While some fashion critics argued that the singer-actor digressed from the theme, others backed him for representing his country and cultural identity, which was the central purpose of this year’s gala.

Diljit’s ensemble was a tribute to Patiala’s Maharaja Bhupinder Singh, dressed in an ivory sherwani, bejewelled turban, ceremonial sword, and embroidered cape with the map of Punjab and Gurmukhi script. The outfit was crafted by designer, Prabal Gurung, who praised Diljit for staying true to his roots. Talking about representing Punjabi culture on a global platform, Diljit said:

“I am trying to bring Punjab to the Met Gala red carpet. I feel it is late. This should have happened much earlier. Many artists tried, but things happen on their own time. Our culture is very rich. Many inspirations have been taken from India and recreated all over the world.”

Despite all the delays and mishaps, Diljit ultimately stole the show, becoming the 'Voted Best Dressed' in a Vogue poll, beating global icons like Zendaya and Rihanna. He was also among the elite guests invited to the Met Gala’s co-chair Anna Wintour’s private dinner, where he shared the table with Shakira, Nicole Scherzinger, and Gayle King.
