Recently, Diljit Dosanjh appeared on Kaun Banega Crorepati 17 to raise awareness and funds for families affected by the recent floods in Punjab. During the episode, he shared his childhood story. The Punjabi singer revealed that he was only 10 or 11 when his parents decided to send him away to his maternal uncle’s house.

Diljit shared that he was quite upset with them because they didn’t ask him whether he wanted to go to his maternal uncle’s house. He mentioned that he got an opportunity to visit his parents once every three or four months. Diljit then added some unheard information about his dad’s profession. He was quoted as saying:
"My father worked in a government job; he was a ticket checker on the roadways. He was like a saint who led a very simple life. He didn’t have many desires — just a bicycle, and he loved mangoes. Once he told me, ‘Beta, tumhe khane ko roti milegi, rehne ko ghar milega, baki jo zindagi mein karna chahe woh khud se kar sakte ho. What more could I have asked from him? I love him dearly."

In the same episode, Diljit opened up about the financial constraints his family had to endure in the past. Diljit shared that after his first album was released, someone approached him to book him for a birthday party. He mentioned that these performances brought money to their home, as often his dad’s salary ran out early in the month. Diljit added that he started charging Rs. 2000 per show and continued performing in wedding ceremonies. He was quoted as saying:
"After my first album was released, someone came to book me for a birthday party, and we performed there. After that, money started coming in, and it felt good because my father’s salary would finish early in the month. So I realised this work pays well, and God has been kind. After that, anyone who came to our office, we never let them leave empty-handed. Whether it was a wedding, birthday, or any function, we performed. We started with Rs. 2,000 per show and did countless wedding performances."

Diljit Dosanjh began his music career with Ishq Da Uda Ada and gained recognition with his third album, Smile. He made his acting debut with the Punjabi film, The Lion of Punjab.
