Who would have thought that a film’s box-office success or failure will be a deciding factor for a couple if they will get married or not? It was in 2000, when Twinkle Khanna and Aamir Khan starrer Mela had released and though the film had turned out to be a flop, it definitely changed the life of Bollywood’s Khiladi, Akshay Kumar. During the shoot of International Khiladi, Twinkle had developed an interest in this ‘six feet of chocolate ice cream’ as a rebound from her failed relationship. In 2001, Akshay Kumar and Twinkle Khanna had tied the knot in a private affair and soon after finishing her pending commitments, the latter had bid goodbye to the film industry. It has been 19 years since Akshay and Twinkle had embarked on their ‘happily ever after’ journey, and it’s inspiring how they proudly bask in the glory of each other’s success. Well, as per the introduction by the host himself, Karan Johar, ‘Poles apart. He is diplomatic, she is opinionated. He is lull, she is storm.’ For the first-time ever, Akshay Kumar and Twinkle Khanna had appeared for an interview together and it was none other than Karan Johar’s celebrity chat show, Koffee With Karan season 5. The show was all about Twinkle's electrifying and unfiltered statements and Akshay's moments of embarrassment. In one such revelation, Twinkle had shared how her mother, Dimple Kapadia had reacted when Akshay had asked the then 28-year-old diva’s hand for marriage.
Twinkle Khanna had narrated, “So, my mother and me are sitting together on the couch and he’s sitting opposite. My mother’s friend was there and he’s doing acupressure for her back or something. So my mother says, ‘I have to tell you something.’ So, I said tell me. ‘No, no after he goes.’ But when I insisted, she said that one of our friend was doing a piece on a gay newspaper says that Akshay is gay. So, I almost fainted.” Then Dimple Kapadia had kept a condition before Akshay and Twinkle, “You both live together for one year and then we’ll see.” Akshay and Twinkle then lived together for a year and in 2001, they had finally tied the knot. Not only this, after 15 years of their marriage (in 2016), an interesting fact about Akshay Kumar and Twinkle Khanna’s courtship days had come up, when on Koffee With Karan season 5, the latter had revealed that she had done a complete background health checkup of her then soon-to-be beau's family to avoid any medical discrepancies! Stating the reason, Twinkle had revealed, “The reason you get married is primarily to have children. So, you are introducing this genetic strain into your family line. I wanted to know what are the diseases running in his family. At what age did his uncles lose their hair. What did Kanchan chachi die of.”
While the host of the show, Karan Johar, and his guests, Akshay Kumar and Twinkle Khanna burst out laughing, Mr Khiladi had stated that he got to know about the same only after they were married. While Akshay had admitted to the fact that he was annoyed over this at the beginning but later realised that wife, Twinkle had a valid reason to do so. But the main question was if Akshay’s family had passed the litmus test? And this is what Mrs Funnybones had replied, “They did pass my litmus test. Most of them are still alive because they have healthy genes!”
While you still might be guffawing over Twinkle Khanna’s wit, remember that fun, throwback, Koffee with Karan chat, wherein, when Karan Johar had asked Twinkle about that one thing which Akshay has, but no other hero possesses and she had replied, “A few extra inches (pauses)…vertically.” And when it comes to taking digs at each other, Akshay Kumar too isn’t far behind. In an interview on a chat show with Rajeev Masand for CNN, when Akshay was asked about how he felt on Twinkle’s career switch (from acting to writing), he had hysterically retorted, “Yes, looking at the 14 films what she has done, writing has been her best decision!"
