Diogo Jota died in a tragic car crash, and the incredibly talented Portuguese footballer, who was a crucial part of Liverpool's title-winning Premier League squad last season, is no longer with us. The heartbreaking news has shaken the entire world. According to a report in Spain's Guardian Civil, an accident happened around 12:30 a.m. on Thursday on the A-52 highway, which is located near the Cernadilla town.
According to the Guardian Civil, the car left the road due to a sudden tire blowout that occurred while the vehicle was overtaking. The Portuguese footballer, Diogo Jota, was inside the car with his brother, Andre Silva, and both occupants died on the spot. While Jota was a renowned footballer, courtesy of his success with Liverpool, his younger brother, Andre Silva, was starting to raise eyebrows. For the uninitiated, Andre Silva was 25 and he was playing for FC Penafiel, which is currently in Liga Portugal 2 (second tier).
As soon as the unfortunate news of Diogo Jota's demise made its way on the internet, several footballers shared their condolences on social media. The football legend, Cristiano Ronaldo, who had won two Nations League trophies with Jota for Portugal, also shared a teary-eyed note on Instagram.
Cristiano Ronaldo shared a monochrome picture of Jota in the Portuguese jersey and shared how heartbreaking it is for him to hear this news. Ronaldo wished strength for Jota's wife, Rute Cardoso and their three children. Ronaldo's note could be read as:
"Doesn't make any sense. Just now we were together in the National Team, just now you were married. To your family, to your wife and children, I send my condolences and wish them all the strength in the world. I know you will always be with them. R.I.P. Diogo and Andre. We will all miss you."
There's nothing crueller than the unpredictability of life, and the entire world has experienced it once again at the expense of a stupendous young footballer, Diogo Jota. Talking about Rute Cardoso's professional front, not much is known about it, but she was always an unsung hero in her husband's football career. For the uninitiated, Jota and Rute met for the first time when they were just mere teenagers in high school. As time passed, they evolved from close friends into a couple, and after being together in love for over a decade, they started a family in 2021. Rute and Jota welcomed their first child, Dinis, in February 2021 and a second child in 2023. The couple embraced parenthood for the third time in 2024, when Rute gave birth to their second daughter.
Throughout their relationship, while Diogo Jota was fully focused on his career, it was his girlfriend-turned-wife, Rute Cardoso, who made sure that the home fires kept burning. She took care of their children and ensured that the move from Portugal to Spain and eventually to England wouldn't hinder their development.
For the uninitiated, Diogo Jota previously played for FC Porto in Portugal and had brief stints with Atletico Madrid and Real Valladolid in Spain. However, his career took a big jump when he moved to England, where he played for Wolverhampton before joining Liverpool in 2020.
