Liverpool's Portuguese footballer, Diogo Jota, passed away in a terrible car crash near Zamora in Spain at the hours of July 3, 2025. The 28-year-old footballer was travelling with his 25-year-old brother when their Lamborghini had a tyre burst, which caused the vehicle to go off the road and catch fire. The famous footballer Diogo Jota is survived by his wife, Rute Cardoso and their three children, two sons, Denis and Duarte and a daughter born in October 2024. The couple got officially married 10 days before this fatal accident.
Diogo Jota got married to Rute Cardoso on June 22, 2025. The couple celebrated their special day with their kids. They fell in love during their teens, and had seen each other's highs and lows. After a rollercoaster journey, when the couple thought their life was sorted, destiny played its game, and Diogo left for the heavenly abode. Just a few hours before his fatal accident, Digago's wife shared their wedding video, which started with his bride's beautiful journey, and also featured Diogo. The clip also had a special appearance by one of their son. On it, Diago wrote:
"A day we will never forget."
It is worth mentioning that Rute is the mother of three children with Diogo. The couple has been together for several years and decided to formally get married and commit to each other after the birth of their daughter last year. They sought stability and love for their lives. The couple welcomed their first child, a son named Denis, in 2021 and announced the birth of their second child, Duarte, in 2023. It was in 2024 that their family was completed with the arrival of a princess, whose name had not yet been announced publicly.
At the wee hours of July 3, 2025, the Portuguese player was travelling with his brother, Andre Felipe, who was 25 years old. They were in northwestern Spain when their Lamborghini veered off the road and burst into flames. According to a statement from Spanish police, it was revealed that Jota's vehicle had a tyre burst while he was trying to overtake, leading to the unfortunate accident.
Jota and his brother lost their lives in the fatal crash, and their bodies have been transported to a forensics unit in Zamora for autopsies. The entire football world is in shock, and fans have been expressing their pain on social media. Liverpool FC, for whom Jota played his best years, expressed their deep sorrow. The Portuguese football federation also expressed their shock at Diogo and his brother's deaths in Spain. They remembered his extraordinary performance and the legacy he had left in the world. The statement can be read as:
"Utterly devastated by the deaths of Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva this morning in Spain. Far beyond being an exceptional player, with nearly 50 caps for the National Team, Diogo Jota was an extraordinary person, respected by all teammates and opponents, someone with a contagious joy and a reference within his own community."
