Vikram Sugumaran was a well-known Tamil film director. He has worked with several ace actors, including Shanthanu Bhagyaraj, Prabhu, Kathir, and Viji Chabdrashaekhar. His sudden passing has left the entire film industry shocked. 

Vikram Sugumaran passes away while travelling on a bus

Vikram Sugumaran, known for his films, Madhayanaik Koottam and Ravana Kottam, passed away due to a heart attack on June 2, 2025. According to reports, the director was travelling by bus from Madurai to Chennai when the sudden cardiac arrest took away the creative soul from the film industry. The news of his demise has shocked Tamil cinema fans and the film industry. Details about his last rites are yet to be shared.

Netizens react to the passing of Vikram Sugumaran

Vikram Sugumaran's friend and actor, Shanthnu Bhagyaraj, shared the tragic news with the fans on his X handle. He called the director his brother and revealed how he had learnt so much from him. He added that he will cherish every moment he spent with him and stated:

"#Rip dearest brother @VikramSugumara3 I've learnt so much from you & will always cherish every moment. Gone too soon. You will be missed #RIPVikramSugumaran."

Soon after, netizens started chiming in, sharing their condolences. Some shocked fans enquired what had happened, while others asked if the news was true. Several fans dropped folded hand emoticons. A used penned, "RIP sir, condolences to his family and loved ones." Another wrote, "Shocking...He deserves so much more recognition for his first film, #madhayaanaikootam."

Vikram Sukumaran made his directorial debut with the film, Madha Yaanai Koottam in 2013. The film beautifully and vividly captured the life and caste conflicts of southern Tamil Nadu and received immense critical acclaim. The film starred Kathir and Anju. He also worked as an assistant director with Balu Mahendra and dabbled in acting in films like Polladhavan and Kodiveeran. The talented director also showed his skills in Aadukalam as a dialogue writer.

Despite gaining success as a director with his first film, Madha Yaanai Koottam, Vikram took a decade to return to the silver screen in the directorial position. The filmmaker once again showed his impeccable skills with Ravana Kottam in 2023, which highlighted the caste and political issues prevailing in the society. This film starred Shanthanu, Anandhi, Prabhu, Ilavarasu, Deepa, and Aruldas. However, the film was not well received. He last directed the film, Therum Borum, which focused on climbing and mountaineering. Nonetheless, it is said that the film has not yet been completed.

The filmmaker, Vikram Sugumaran, hailed from Paramakudi in Ramanathapuram district. He came to Chennai with the desire to become an actor in cinema. However, destiny had different plans for him. He first joined director Balu Mahendra as an assistant. He has worked with director Balu Mahendra on 56 short films released between 1999 and 2000, including films like Julie Ganapathy.
