Divya Dutta is a prolific name in the film industry and there is no doubt about it. Multiple award winner and a National Award holder, she started off her career as a notable performer in the Punjabi regional film industry. Moving forth, Divya has proven her mettle in the craft through numerous performances in Bollywood films like Veer Zaara, Veergati, Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat, Baghban, LOC Kargil among countless others. Recently, the actress opened up about facing rejections in the film industry.
In an interaction with The Lallantop, Divya Dutta reminisced about the various highs and lows of her film career. The diva remarked that during the initial years post her debut, she became a victim of frequent rejections from already-signed films, due to her physical appearance. She recalled a particular incident that left her feeling frustrated, when she was sent back from the shooting set, just because she lost a few kilos. In her words:
“I was dropped from many movies, in fact, for one of them I had reached the set and was sent back, saying that I had lost a lot of weight. I was very frustrated. I would feel very objectified and I started searching for humanity and realized that it doesn’t exist in this business. I remember telling my mother that if I had done that film with Shah Rukh Khan, I would have been a superstar and she told me that those people would come in life to work with me and that happened.”

Moving forth in the conversation, Divya Dutta revealed that on the basis of her appearance and personality, she hasn’t been tailored for doing roles of mainstream heroines, full of glamour. She recalled a time when multi-starrer films were in fashion and she had to go door-to-door of the producers to land a project. Moreover, even if she signed a deal for 22 films back-to-back, only two out of them would actually be made, and she would only get side characters. She mentioned:
“Life trains you to deal with rejections. When I had not signed any film, I would go to every producer’s office asking for work. That was a time when multi-starrers were made, so there would be an opportunity. But I did not realize that I would not fit in that frame of a typical very glamorous heroine. I was a cute girl and a good actor, but only I knew that. One day I felt I had signed 22 films, some of them even gave me a token. Nobody was saying no. Later I got to know that the 22 films I told my mother I was starting, only 2 out of them went on floors and I was not the heroine for those.”
In the final segment of the interaction, Divya Dutta revealed that in as competitive a field of work like films, rejection is quite prevalent and mostly everyone has faced it. However, talking about the matter of nepotism, the diva remarked that favouritism isn’t just restricted for such candidates from film families, but also exercised for newcomers, without any specific reason. Talking about her own experiences, Divya mentioned that there have been multiple times when she lost a project to an outsider just like her.
