However, it has also shaped one of the biggest moments of shared grief and empathy in sports.
The baseball world witnessed a rare and powerful display of compassion when the Dodgers and Blue Jays set aside their rivalry to stand with Alex and Kayla. It began a few days ago when Dodgers players wore Alex's jersey number 51 on their hats during the series. Soon, the Blue Jays' relievers joined in and added '51' on their caps to express their solidarity in a touching display of how humanity lies beyond competition.

The simple gesture led to something even greater. After Alex's opened up about his loss fans from both teams began to donate USD 51 each in a tribute to Alex's jersey number to Toronto's SickKids Hospital. For those unaware, it is one of the world's top pediatric facilities. According to the Toronto Star, the hospital confirmed getting several U.S.-based donations accompanied by notes referencing the pitcher. "Jays' fan here. I just saw an article by the Toronto Star mentioning that a number of you donated to SickKids, and I wanted to thank you all! Class act and to one of my personal favourite charities! I appreciate your continued donations and love you guys for this. They do amazing work, and I can personally attest to their work as one of their patients growing up!
