Dwayne Johnson Opens Up About The 'Volcanic' Relationship Of His Parents, 'I Was Probably Scared...'

Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson is a global superstar, who is known for both his wrestling and acting skills. He is well recognised for his unmatched strength on and off-screen. While his current images reflect power, confidence and resistance, do you know he grew up in a dysfunctional family? Well, that's right. The Black Adam actor recently opened up about the same.

Dwayne Johnson grew up watching his mom dad fight all the time

Recently, Dwayne Johnson had a candid conversation with The Variety, during which he opened up about his mom and dad’s relationship while he was growing up. He described their relationship as ‘volcanic’. He shared that his dad was a pro-wrestler at that time, while his mother was busy raising their children. 'The Rock' explained that his family wasn’t very rich and they used to survive on the small contracts of his dad. In his words:

"My own mom and dad had an explosive and volcanic relationship. My dad was a pro wrestler at a time when it was the Wild West. There weren’t million-dollar contracts. It was paycheque to paycheque and just trying to survive. And my dad struggled with his addictions and focused on his career and himself, while my mom was at home, raising me."

Dwayne Johnson continued to reveal that his mother had to give up all her dreams only to support her husband and their family. His mother only wished to be seen in the family; however that didn’t happen. This ultimately resulted in arguments between her and her husband. Dwayne further said that he grew up listening to those fights. He was quoted as saying:

"She had to give up her own dreams and support the man that she loves. All she wanted was to be seen, and she was never seen. And I grew up watching that kind of decline in a relationship when a man battles his own demons. I watched their fights. I heard their fights, which is even worse."

Dwayne Johnson revisited his past trauma while working on The Smashing Machine

During the same chat with The Variety, Dwayne Johnson revealed that during the early days of his career, he used to hide his pain and did movies that portrayed him as 'perfect' or the 'hero'. However, a turning point came in his life when he chose to do The Smashing Machine. He shared that while shooting the film, he got the opportunity to revisit his past trauma and get rid of the piled up anger.

Dwayne Johnson further stated that an actor always thinks about the audience while choosing a film. An actor thinks if the audience will like the role or not, but he, for the first time, did not think about any of that while doing The Smashing Machine. He shared:

"For years, I didn’t know that could actually serve as a landing place for me to be able to put all this trauma you go through into my work. I was probably scared to go there. It was the most freeing I have ever felt in my entire career. When you make these blockbuster films, you have the responsibility of making the audience feel good and the choices you make (are dictated by) the character’s likability. And for the first time, every shot, every day, regardless of the scene, that never crossed my mind."
