The star judge has a long history on the show, having appeared on 25 seasons before her exit in 2022. While she has openly spoken about her departure from the show, she has not been as open about her life beyond the lens. 

DWTS holds a special place in Cheryl Burke's heart, as it didn't just make her a much-loved name in the country but also introduced her to the love of her life, Matthew Lawrence. The dancing star married Matthew in 2019 after their 2006 meet-up, when the latter's brother, Joey Lawrence, was a contestant on the third season of the dance competition, and they started dating early the next year. Matthew Lawrence and Cheryl Burke felt sparks fly as soon as they connected during DWTS. However, after a year of dating, the couple called it quits in February 2008. They reconciled nearly a decade later in 2017, but this time Matthew made sure that he won't let Cheryl slip away and got down on one knee in May 2018. The couple got married one year later. The dancing star filed for divorce within 3 years of marriage on February 18, 2022, listing January 7 of that year as the date of separation. The divorce was finalized in September 2022. During a May 2022 appearance on The Tamron Hall Show, Cheryl confirmed that she and Matthew were in couples therapy before their split. She was quoted as saying:

"I think it’s very healthy to have that third person there that’s not biased and that can give you ways and tools on how to communicate."

Why did Cheryl Burke and Matthew Lawrence part ways?

One would think that if fate brings two people back together after a decade, they were meant to be. However, that's not always the case, and Cheryl Burke and Matthew Lawrence are living proof. Nonetheless, what happened that the duo had to get a divorce? Cheryl shared her side of why the marriage failed during a 2024 appearance on the I Do, Part 2, podcast. She explained that her busy work schedule and her role as the family's breadwinner took a toll on her relationship.

Cheryl Burke spoke about how her work schedule affected her relationship. She also admitted that her asking for a prenup before tying the knot "raised a lot of concerns, especially on his behalf." Cherly, in the same conversation, also took accountability, noting that she doesn't know if she was necessarily ready for a wedding, but 'selfishly' wanted to see if she could get married.

However, the only thing Cheryl missed was that there were many red flags, yet she decided to go forward with their nuptials. She was quoted as saying:

"I was just at the height of the success of Dancing With the Stars. We were on tour, we did two seasons a year and two tours a year. So I was just working all around the clock and barely had a day off. I guess he wasn’t necessarily working as much at the time. He was working, but not as much. I knew what I was marrying. I knew what I was getting into financially. I’m not going to speak for him. I’m not here to badmouth him whatsoever. But I believe that there is this gender role. A man may feel a little emasculated when he doesn’t make the majority of the money. I think that may have taken a toll."

Did Cheryl Burke and Matthew Lawrence have any kids?

Cheryl Burke and Matthew Lawrence were married for less than three years. However, during their time together, they didn't have any children, but the couple did adopt a fur baby. The couple brought home a dog during their relationship and were even involved in a custody battle over the pooch after their split. Matthew bought Cheryl the dog for their first wedding anniversary.

The dancing pro, in a 2022 conversation with Entertainment Tonight, spoke about being a dog mom and confirmed she had no problem going to trial if Matthew Lawrence didn't relent. In January 2023, Cheryl Burke confirmed that she won the custody battle, noting that she was now a "FULL TIME dog mom". She was quoted as saying:

"She’s my dog, and it was a gift from my ex, and I hope that this soon, you know, dies down, and he calls it off. Because you’re taking, like, my daughter away from me. I'm a dog mom. And that’s it. I can’t even imagine my life. I mean, I could just cry right now, but, like, I couldn’t imagine my life without her."
