Ekta Kapoor is counted as one of the most successful producers of both Indian television and cinema. She has contributed magnanimously in both the fields, and has created some amazing cult projects that people hail her for even today. And now, Ekta Kapoor revealed a startling unheard detail about casting one of her best actresses turned BFF, Smriti Irani.
Ekta Kapoor took to her IG handle and dropped a birthday wish for her bestie, Smriti Irani, where the former revealed an unheard anecdote about casting the actress for her first television debut. Dropping the theme song video of the show, Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, Ekta recalled how back during the 2000s, she had first come across the audition of a young Smriti Irani for a project that she was then working on. While she had disliked Smriti’s performance in the audition tape and had immediately torn her contract for that role, she added how she instantly had roped in Smriti Irani for the iconic serial, Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi. In her words:
“Year 2000 six years have passed since HUMPAANCH and I’m asking Sameer sir @sameern to give me a drama my South Indian drama is doing well and Hindi channel should see at it he says yes. Same year March 2000, I cast a new girl for an important role but on seeing her on tape I tear her contract only to sign as her as a lead on a spring day in March it also happens to be her bday @smritiiraniofficial.”

The friendship between Ekta Kapoor and Smriti Irani goes beyond years of working together. The duo have known each other for decades, and have shared a great bond with one another, a relation much like an extended family. Proof of the same was found when in March 2020, Ekta had penned an adorable note for her bestie, Smriti on her social media handle, on the occasion of Women’s Day. She highlighted how the latter had inspired her to do better in life. Calling Smriti her soul sister, Ekta mentioned:
“This woman started working with me then became my best friend then went on to take on d world of politics! She is adept to talk on anything from art politics business movies... and has perfected the art of parenting (if there is anything as perfect) multitasking balancing multiple roles. She makes me wanna do better! Not on woman’s day but I celebrate our friendship every day. #soulsister credit: @smritiiraniofficial.”
Apart from being a soul-sister to Ekta Kapoor, Smriti Irani is a doting maasi to the former’s son, Ravie Kapoor. And giving a glimpse of the same, maasi, Smriti Irani had penned a sweet note for Ravie’s first birthday on January 27, 2020. Taking to her IG handle, she penned a long note as she recalled the days when she sat with Ekta, and they awaited the arrival of Ravie into their lives. She showered unconditional love on Ekta’s son and blessed him with all good wishes. She also shared a cute video where Smriti Irani could be spotted reading a book to Ravie.

In an earlier interview with the Indian Express, Smriti Irani had recalled the old days when she was offered the role of ‘Tulsi Virani’ in Ekta Kapoor’s serial, Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi. She mentioned that in those days, she had no idea who Ekta was, who had promised her enormous wealth and stardom, if she was to do the serial. She mentioned:
“Ekta said, ‘You know what I am making?’ and I said, ‘I don’t even know who you are’. She said ‘I am Ekta Kapoor’ and I said ‘Achi baat hai’. My sole focus was that Rs 1800 should not change. And I signed it. Ekta said she will make me a ‘star’, and I was thinking pata nahi kaun hai.”
