Bruce Willis’ wife, Emma Heming Willis, is clapping back at online critics after revealing that the actor has now been shifted into a separate home amid his battle with frontotemporal dementia (FTD). The mother of two opened up about how difficult the decision has been for the family during ABC’s recent special, Emma and Bruce: The Unexpected Journey with Diane Sawyer, and has since been met with both empathy and harsh backlash.
For those unaware of Bruce Willis’ unfortunate health condition, the Hollywood star was first diagnosed with aphasia in 2022, and a year later, his condition advanced to FTD. His family has revealed that the 70-year-old actor, though still physically strong and mobile, has reached the stage of his disease where he no longer remembers much of his acting career.
Bruce’s wife, Emma, who is also appointed his care provider, recently revealed that the actor has been shifted into a nearby one-storey home designed specifically for his medical needs. The residence has round-the-clock carers and a quieter environment. While it was ‘one of the hardest decisions’ of her life, Emma says it was essential for both Bruce’s condition and their daughters, Mabel (13) and Evelyn (11). She mentioned:
"It was one of the hardest decisions that I've had to make so far. But I knew, first and foremost, Bruce would want that for our daughters. You know, he would want them to be in a home that was more tailored to their needs, not his needs."
Emma’s revelation has since sparked online backlash, with netizens accusing her of being ‘cold’ and abandoning her husband, while some others even started questioning her right to inherit Willis’ property. Some blasted the actor’s family, claiming Emma ‘got rid of the inconvenience’, even though they could easily afford 24-hour nursing.
On Friday, August 29, 2025, Emma took to her Instagram to respond to the hate and criticism she has been receiving recently. In a heartfelt video, the 47-year-old shared a powerful message, highlighting how easily those with no experience can question the caregiver. She said:

“What I knew was that by sharing some of our intimate information, we would see these two camps—it would be people with an opinion versus people with an actual experience… That is what caregivers are up against… Nothing changes an opinion quite as powerfully as when you have an experience… if they don't have the experience of this, they don't get a say, and they definitely don't get a vote."
Emma noted that those who don’t have a first-hand experience as a care provider in a familiar condition are in no position to judge a family that’s facing it. She pointedly addressed critics who have never walked in her shoes. Heming noted that she wants to chronicle this caregiving journey to help those in similar conditions understand the grim realities of the condition. The caption to her post reads:
"Too often, caregivers are judged quickly and unfairly by those who haven't lived this journey or stood on the front lines of it. Sharing openly may invite opinions, but more importantly, it creates connection and validation for those actually navigating the realities of caregiving every day. That's who I share for, and so I can build a deeper connection with a community that understands this journey."

Even though the Die Hard star no longer lives in his home, his new residence is still very much part of their family’s daily life. Emma dismissed rumours of isolation and shared how she and the girls spend most of their time there, and Willis has been living surrounded by love, warmth, and laughter.
Since Bruce’s 2023 diagnosis, his loving wife, Emma, has become a vocal advocate of dementia awareness. She has an active presence on social media, where she chronicles the everyday challenges of navigating the caregiving journey. Her memoir, The Unexpected Journey: Finding Strength, Hope and Yourself on the Caregiving Path, will be released on September 9, 2025, offering a raw look into her experiences.
