Emraan Hashmi and Yami Gautam’s courtroom drama, Haq, is already creating a lot of noise on social media. For the unversed, the film, Haq, is based on true events and features the historic Shah Bano case. The film is scheduled to release on big screens on November 7, 2025. But now it seems the Emraan Hashmi and Yami Gautam starrer might face a release delay. Shah Bano’s legal heirs have filed a petition against the film ahead of its release.
According to multiple reports, the legal heirs of Shah Bano, the Muslim woman who fought for her rights in the late '70s against her husband, Mohammed Ahmad Khan, filed a petition in Indore High Court through their Counsel, Adv Tousif Warsi. They demanded an immediate stay on the movie. In their petition, they claimed that Haq hurts Muslim sentiments and portrays a negative and misogynistic image. They have also claimed that the movie's makers do not have any legal rights to them. The case proceedings will start soon. According to an India Today report, the makers of Haq will be represented by Hitesh Jain, Parinaam Law, and Ameet Naik of Naik & Naik.

Suparn S. Varma’s upcoming courtroom drama, Haq, starring Emraan Hashmi and Yami Gautam, draws inspiration from the real-life case of Shah Bano. It was a legal battle that became a landmark and reshaped the debate over women’s rights and secularism in India. The film revisits the story of a Muslim woman, Shah Bano, who moved to the Supreme Court in the late '70s after her husband, a famous advocate from Indore, Mohammed Ahmad Khan, abandoned her and their five children.

Their case, Mohd. Ahmed Khan vs. Shah Bano Begum, became one of the most talked-about legal cases in Indian legal history, sparking nationwide debate on the rights of Muslim women and the urgent need for a Uniform Civil Code. In Haq, Yami Gautam plays the role of Shah Bano, and her character’s name is 'Shazia Bano'. The courtroom drama delves into the emotional and social turmoil that a woman faces. She is not only fighting against her husband but also against a deeply rooted patriarchal system.

Emraan Hashmi plays a dual role as her husband, 'Abbas', and the rival lawyer in court, adding a dramatic twist to the narrative of the film. Through this powerful dynamic, the courtroom drama explores themes of love, betrayal, justice, and moral conflict. Based on Jigna Vora’s book Bano: Bharat ki Beti, Haq blends fact and fiction while remaining faithful to the true events and the core essence of Shah Bano’s case. More than just a legal drama, Haq raises enduring questions about justice and equality in a diverse nation like India.
