Bollywood has often reduced an actor's image to his famous on-screen roles. People think it enhances their popularity but rather it limits their potential to a particular kind of role. In the history of Hindi cinema, only some stars have been able to break that image while others have submitted to it. Among them, Emraan Hashmi has been one star, who has both benefitted and suffered due to it. In 2004, when the actor delivered his breakthrough film, Murder, he became popular as a serial kisser in Bollywood. Fans began to recognise him, and scripts were written keeping his image in consideration. But, in a recent interview, Emraan shared why he was annoyed with it.
Emraan Hashmi, who became popular as the 'serial kisser' in Bollywood, began getting annoyed with the tag after he achieved fame. Many felt that the actor was ungrateful, but he shared the reason behind his annoyance in a recent conversation with Ranveer Allahbadia on his podcast channel. He admitted that there was a point in his career when he began getting irritated with the tag that brought him into the limelight, because he wanted people to consider him to be a serious actor. Recalling the phase, Emraan said:
“A large part of my career 2003 to 2012, is chhavi ko is tarah nichoda gaya tha ki wo ek label ban gaya tha, wo marketing main istemaal kiya jata tha. Har film main bina wajah cheezein daali jati thi. Aur media mein bhi jab aata tha ek tag line, toh mere naam se pehle wo tag aata tha - Serial Kisser."
Emraan was unhappy when filmmakers included kissing scenes just for him, even when there was no place for it in the script. The 46-year-old actor mentioned that he made several attempts to get away from that image. But, despite his efforts, even his audience wanted to see him playing similar roles, which made things difficult. However, apart from that, he has no major issue with it and is chill about it. He said:
"You try to do different films. But then, people used to be like, 'accha, isme toh yeh nahi tha'. I am presenting something new. I am an actor. It is my job to play different characters. Why do you want to see the same again? Because of this, I used to get a little annoyed. But otherwise, I am chill about it. I do not have many issues with it."
Previously, in an interview with Shubhankar Mishra, Emraan shared that he doesn't blame the audience for creating his 'serial kisser' image because until 2009, he and his film producers, marketed the image. At the same time, it became an easy and unique way for people to recognise him, which brought him initial success. The actor said:
"I don't blame the audience. A large part of my career until 2009, 7-8 saal tak, woh image thaa mera joh producers sell kar rahey the. Mai khud sell kar raha tha. I don't know what it is. I think that it is a label or an identification with an actor, and it becomes an easy-peasy identification for them."
Emraan Hashmi comes from a filmy background, and his uncle, Mahesh Bhatt, suggested him to join films. He began working as an assistant director in 2002 with the film, Raaz. He debuted with the 2002 film, Footpath and succeeded with Murder, Zeher, Aashiq Banaya Aapne, Kalyug, Aksar, and Gangster. Another turning point in his career was the 2008 film, Jannat, where he proved his capability and he started playing unconventional roles like The Dirty Picture, Murder 2, Jannat 2, Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai, Shanghai and more. Emraan was last seen in Karan Johar's web series, Showtime.
