Kajol, Rani Mukerji's Grandpa's Filmistan Studios SOLD For Rs. 183 Crore To Make Luxury Apartments

Kajol and Rani Mukerji's grandfather, Sashadhar Mukherjee, had founded Filmistan Studios back in 1943. It has been one of the oldest and most iconic film studios of Mumbai, which has now officially been sold to Arkade Developers for crores. According to a Times Now Digital report, the transaction of the same took place on July 3, 2025 and put an end to the era of Hindi cinema's golden age. The Filmistan Studios were once a base for stars, technicians, as well as production houses.

Filmistan Studio, located in Goregaon West, Mumbai, as per the report, will be redeveloped into ultra-luxurious residential towers. Kajol and Rani's grandpa, Sashadhar Mukherjee, with stars Ashok Kumar, Gyan Mukherjee, and Rai Bahadur Chunilal, founded it. The report stated that Filmistan Studios, known for its rich history in Bollywood, has been purchased by Arkade Developers Limited in Mumbai for Rs. 183 crore. Filmistan Studios had split from Bombay Talkies and then became a buckstop for Hindi cinema making. In those days, the studio was not just a shooting area but a full-blown production home where stars were employed and the crew was paid monthly.

All Indian Cine Workers Association (AICWA) requests Maharashtra CM, Devendra Fadnavis, to stop the deal

All Indian Cine Workers Association (AICWA) has reacted to Filmistan Studios being sold and has urged  Maharashtra’s Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis, to immediately stop the creation of luxurious flats in the area. AICWA has requested to stop the demolition of Filmistan Studios and save the employment of the technicians who have relied on the studio to make a living. A part of the letter read:

"Filmistan Studio, located in Goregaon, Mumbai-established in 1943, is one of the most iconic and historic film studios in India. This heritage structure, which has seen the rise of Indian cinema and has been a workplace for lakhs of technicians, artists, junior artists, and workers, has reportedly been sold to Arkade Developers for 183 crores. Over the decades, Filmistan Studio has served as a foundation for creative work, providing space for countless Bollywood and Indian cinema productions."

The letter also stated that the Filmistan Studio is not just a physical structure; it has been a symbolic representation of the legacy of Hindi cinema, along with the sweat and hard work of the working class behind the camera. The grievance in the letter mentioned on several other heritage studios that are also on the verge of being sold and demolished, leading to a grave threat to employment for lakhs of workers, daily wage earners, and artists.

Filmistan Studios to turn into 5 BHK residences?

A report by the Economic Times mentioned that Arcade Developers will be making an uber luxurious project that is estimated to be around Rs. 3,000 crore. The high-rise building will be launched in 2026, and the report mentioned that two 50-storey towers will be made with 3, 4, and 5 BHK residences. Arkade Developers Chairman, as well as Managing Director, Amit Jain, confirmed the news on LinkedIn and shared:
