Everything About Flying In Private Jet: Prefered By Celebs, Round Trip Cost Worth Lakhs And More

Most of the airport looks of Bollywood celebrities shot by the paparazzi are from Mumbai's Kalina airport. This airport is primarily used for private, VIP or charter planes. Many celebrities prefer private planes for the added facilities, privacy, fewer crowds, and to reach their destinations much quicker than commercial airlines. However, private planes are an extreme luxury which only very few people can afford. So, most of the general public is always keen to know how different private jets are from commercial aircraft.

Inside a charter aircraft preferred by most Bollywood celebrities

Most people are under the assumption that celebrities who fly on private planes personally own them. However, that is not the case usually. Only a few individuals in India own a private plane. Given the cost of buying and maintaining aircraft, most celebrities rent charter planes when travelling. These private planes are chartered by a company, and then the whole aircraft is rented by the flyer for travel. One such company is Skyline Charters, whose Director, Maria Charles, spoke to The Hollywood Reporter India and gave deep insight about the experience of flying in a private jet.

The Director revealed that most celebrities prefer the Legacy 600 Executive Jet Aircraft, which is a thirteen-seater private jet. Apart from two pilots, there's one cabin crew member present on the flight. However, depending on the number of passengers, one more crew member can also be allotted to the flight, she stated. Inside the aircraft, there are two compartments, one of which can be transformed into two beds. This space can then be covered by drapes for more privacy.

No advance booking needed, said the Director

As per Maria Charles, there is no time limit for booking a flight with a private plane. She said that an operator needs two hours to activate a flight; hence, that is the shortest time possible. However, before flying, they need to make sure that catering is ordered, the aircraft is fueled up, and the pilot has reached the airport. Moreover, pilots also need to rest for 14 hours after every flight. So, if all those things are in place, then no advance booking is needed for charter planes. In her own words, the Director said:

“No time limit is there, I have activated flights in 2 hours also. The operator needs 2 hours to activate the flight. The pilot has to reach the airport, aircraft has to fuel up, catering has to be ordered. Every pilot have to rest for 14 hours after every flight, so we have to check that and see if pilots can fly. If everything is in place then there is no time limit to charter business.”

Clients can arrive just 15 minutes before take-off

Passengers flying in private aircraft do not have to deal with crowds since they have a private airport that is different from the public terminal. If they are flying domestically without luggage, clients flying privately can arrive just 15 minutes before take-off. If they are flying without luggage, then they have to arrive 30 minutes prior for domestic flights and 45 minutes before international flights. To note, most commercial airlines ask passengers to arrive 3 hours prior to take-off for international flights.

Moreover, the Director of the chartered airlines revealed that celebrities have the liberty to send their luggage even before they arrive on the airport. The staff present at the private airport check in all their baggage and load it up on the aircraft even before the passengers arrive. Hence, with everything taken care of, the clients conveniently reach just 15 minutes before take-off.

Cost of renting a private jet for a round trip

People book seats when flying commercially. Meanwhile, passengers have to rent the whole aircraft before taking a private jet. The Director of Skyline Charter, while talking about the cost of renting a plane, said that it differs given the destination and duration. Taking the example of flying from Mumbai to Delhi, she said that it takes about 2 hours and 15 minutes. So, a round trip will be 4 hours and 30 minutes. Maria Charles stated this round-trip journey will cost Rs. 18 lakhs to Rs. 30 lakhs plus GST, with an aircraft ranging between an XL and a Legacy, respectively. The Director stated:

“To fly from Mumbai to Delhi it takes 2 hours and 15 minutes, one way, so the total charter, round trip will be 4 hours and 30 minutes. So, any aircraft ranging from an XL to a Legacy will cost you between Rs 18 lakh to Rs 30 lakh plus GST for the round trip.”
