Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr. first met while filming I Know What You Did Last Summer in 1997. While the couple was not initially interested in marriage, their friendship eventually turned into a relationship after an accidental date. However, over time, they realised they wanted a future together.
The couple tied the knot in 2002 in Mexico after starring in Scooby-Doo. They later welcomed two children, named Charlotte Grace and Rocky James, born in 2009 and 2012, respectively. Sarah Michelle Gellar has often credited their long-lasting marriage to staying present with each other and making time for family. And recently, the couple has marked their togetherness by celebrating Freddie Prinze Jr.'s 50th birthday. So, as they celebrate the joyous occasion, let's look back at their love story.

Sarah and Freddie first met while filming their 1997 slasher film, I Know What You Did Last Summer. In a 2001 interview with PEOPLE, the actor admitted that he and Sarah "really didn't dig each other" at first. However, things took a turn once they got to know each other. He says, "Then one day I gave her a ride to the gym. We talked on the way up, and she was a cool chick." Sarah also made a brief cameo in her future husband's iconic 1999 rom-com, She's All That. The director of the film, Robert Iscove, in a 2015 interview, told Cosmopolitan:
"[Gellar] was there visiting Freddie, and we asked her if she would come and do it, and she said she would come and do it, but she wouldn't speak. She wouldn't say any lines. Okay, we don't know why you wouldn't say, 'Thank you,' or 'No.' But that was her thing, and she did it. And to get Buffy in the movie was certainly [a big deal] — because at that point, Buffy was huge."

Sarah and Freddie were friends for a while before going on their first date. However, did you know that their first date was an accident? In a conversation with PEOPLE, the Buffy star said, "We were friends for a very long time. We'd had many dinners before. And we were supposed to go with someone else, and the third person didn't make it out, and we decided to still go." She added that they were just two people catching up for dinner. Nonetheless, for Freddie, it was different, as he didn't go on dates with other girls or pursue anyone else after their date.

Less than two years after Sarah and Freddie began dating, the latter got down on one knee and proposed. At the time, ABC News reportedly announced its engagement at a party for the actress's 24th birthday. A while later, they shared the screen playing 'Fred Jones' and 'Daphne Blake' in the live-action film, Scooby Doo. The couple used the opportunity of the red carpet to announce their engagement as they walked the red carpet together at the premiere in coordinating outfits.

A couple of months later, the couple tied the knot on September 1, 2002. Sarah and Freddie exchanged vows in Mexico at the beautiful El Careyes resort. The gorgeous bride wore a strapless Vera Wang gown on her big day, while the groom wore a linen Sy Devor suit. Celebrity guests at the couple's wedding included Shannen Doherty and Wilmer Valderrama. A guest reflected on the couple's joyous celebration and stated:
"They glowed as they gazed at one another. Everyone could feel the love they were sharing. It was perfect."

Sarah and Freddie spent the following years enjoying each other's company. However, soon after, they decided to expand their family, and in 2009, they welcomed their first child, a daughter named Charlotte Grace Prinze, on September 19. The couple shared that they decided to wait so long because they believed parenthood required maturity, patience, and a willingness to put a child's needs first, something they felt more prepared for in their 30s. In April 2012, the couple shared they were expecting their second child, and on September 20, 2012, their son, Rocky James Prinze, was born.
Sarah and Freddie have some strict rules for their children. In an interview with Yahoo! Life's parenting series, So Mini Ways, Sarah shared that she and Freddie are strict parents, at least when it comes to the internet. When talking about their children, Charlotte and Rocky, Sarah shared that they have one strict rule for them. She added:
"Our rules are probably stricter than most. Our kids don't have social media. They're allowed to look sometimes when it's our phones. I believe kids need to know what their limitations are, and they actually thrive in that environment. We're not mean, we're not unnecessarily strict, but we have rules."
