October 2, 2022, marks the 150th birth anniversary of the Father of the Nation, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi a.k.a., Mahatma Gandhi. This day, the entire nation relives the sacrifices of the legendary hero for his selfless contribution during the fight for 'Independent India'. For the unversed, in May 1883, at a mere age of 13 years, Mohandas had tied the knot with Kasturba in an arranged marriage. Afterwards, they were blessed with their first child in 1886, but unfortunately, the baby left for the heavenly abode within a few days. Soon after this, the couple was blessed with four kids, Harilal (1888), Manilal (1892), Ramdas (1897), and Devdas (1900). After which, Mohandas went to England to study law, and his wife had taken care of their children in India.

Now, we stumbled upon a 1929 article written by Mahatma Gandhi published in a weekly newspaper, Navajivan. In the article titled, "My Sorrow, My Shame", Gandhi opened up about an incident when he got angry with his wife, Kasturba Gandhi for just 4 rupees. Gandhi had begun the article by explaining how much he credits his wife for her uncountable merits. However, he also mentioned that "an ununderstandable, worldly desire still persists" in his wife. He penned:

"Ultimately, I came to the conclusion that it would be a breach of duty if I did not. I consider her life to be pure. She has sacrificed a great deal thinking it to be her duty as a wife... She has not stood in the way of my renunciation. Yet worldly desires remained in her. She has got weaknesses too which mar these virtues."

Elaborating on the incident, Gandhi wrote that some strangers had given her 4 rupees as a present. However, according to their Ashram's rule, nothing can be kept by the residents even if the thing is being presented to them and it needs to be submitted in the office. Thus, explaining how Kasturba's act of keeping teh money with her was illegal, Mahatma added:

"Some days back, some strangers presented four rupees. Instead of giving away the money to the office, according to the usual rule, she kept it with herself. The rule (at the ashram) is that she cannot keep anything like hers, even when it is given for her. So it was illegal to keep those four rupees at that time."

Further, in the same article, Gandhi revealed how the arrival of some thieves at the ashram opened up the situation in front of everyone. Then, with a bit of sarcasm or anger, Gandhi mentioned how Kasturba got nervous after the incident of the arrival of thieves took place and shared:

"The wife's crime was revealed when the thieves broke into the ashram. Fortunately, they found nothing in the room they entered, but her delinquency was detected owing to their coming. However, when the Ashram residents came to know about this, Kasturba was very nervous. Went and was eager to see the money hidden by her."

Finally, he mentioned that after the incident Kasturba repented sincerely, and also vowed that such a thing would not be repeated in her entire life. Then, talking about Kasturba's humbly return of the money, Gandhi concluded:

"I believe hers was a honest repentance. She has taken a vow that she would leave me and the mandir, if any other lapse committed in the past is detected, or if she is caught doing the same thing again in future. The mandir has accepted her repentance.
