What Was Giorgio Armani's 'Only Regret' About Family Life Before His Death At 91? 'Not Enough...'

Giorgio Armani, the legendary Italian fashion designer who founded the eponymous Armani brand, passed away on September 4, 2025. The 91-year-old's struggle in the fashion industry and becoming a successful brand has been an inspiration to many. Known for working tirelessly, even at his advanced age, his dedication to his craft is admirable. The man himself mentioned in several interviews how much he loves working; however, he shared one particular regret he has regarding the same, and it has a connection to his personal life.

Giorgio Armani revealed his 'only regret' in life

Giorgio Armani was known to be a 'workaholic' as he was just as serious and focused about designing in his 90s, as he was in his early days in the industry. His passion for work didn't wane, and his energy stayed strong despite his age. Before his death at the age of 91, Giorgio Armani revealed in an interview with the Financial Times that he credited his hard work as the means by which he reached the pinnacle of success.

However, building his billion-dollar empire required total commitment and that led to his disappointment regarding having to give up many personal relationships for his work. Notably, the interview was Giorgio Armani's final one before his death at the age of 91, which occurred on August 29, 2025. The designer never married and had no children, which may have contributed to his feelings of missing out on family life to a certain extent, as he dedicated himself entirely to his work. Regarding his regret about the same, he said:

"I don't know if I'd use the word workaholic, but hard work is certainly essential to success. My only regret in life was spending too many hours working and not enough time with friends and family."

Giorgio Armani worked even in his final days

The designer, who considered 'work is the best medicine,' also mentioned that his greatest weakness was his desire to maintain control of his brand for as long as possible. Even in his final months, when he missed several fashion shows in June and July 2025 due to illness, Giorgio Armani remotely approved all the final details of the collections. Every aspect of his brand reflected his personal touch, with nothing going without his stamp of approval. Sharing that with the Financial Express, he stated:

"Everything you will see has been done under my direction and carries my approval."

Giorgio Armani's plans for the succession of his empire

In the same interview, Giorgio Armani described a succession plan designed for a gradual transition, and not a 'moment of rupture'. He envisioned his responsibilities passing to a trusted inner circle of family members and longtime collaborators. The late designer's pool of trusted people included his nieces, Silvana Armani and Roberta Armani, his nephew, Andrea Camerana, his sister, Rosanna Armani, and Leo Dell'Orco, the head of Armani's men's design for over 45 years. Regarding his brand's future, Giorgio Armani said:

"My plans for succession consist of a gradual transition of the responsibilities that I have always handled to those closest to me, such as Leo Dell'Orc [the head of men's design for the Armani Group], the members of my family and the entire working team," Armani said. "I would like the succession to be organic and not a moment of rupture."
