Gong Ji-cheol, aka Gong Yoo, as he is popularly known, is one of the most successful actors of Hallyu. His actorial projects are not just sought after in South Korea but are massively appreciated worldwide.
The Squid Game actor recently revealed that, like every other human being, he has also dealt with mental health issues. This resulted in him being void of happiness when his drama, Goblin: The Lonely And Great God, did exceptionally well. For the unversed Goblin: The Lonely And Great God was released in 2016 and was an instant hit worldwide. It is considered to be one of the greatest fantasy K-dramas ever made.

Gong Yoo recently appeared on a 'Chuseok' special episode of Pinggyego where the host asked him if he has ever felt anxious in his life. Gong Yoo shocked everyone by accepting that he had gone through two very dark and anxious phases in his life. Once in his 20s and the other in his 30s. He added that his anxiety did not allow him to experience happiness even when his drama, Goblin: The Lonely And Great God, did well at the box office.
Gong Yoo explained that he was definitely happy that his project did well, but apart from that, he did not feel any excitement or a sense of achievement. He added that it was difficult for him to get out of bed during that phase. He did not enjoy the spotlight and was constantly struggling. Gong Yoo further added:
"I don't think I can explain clearly why I was anxious. For example, 'Guardian: The Lonely and Great God' did very well, but I wasn't happy. I was happy it did well, but apart from that, there was a time when I felt so empty and I couldn't wake myself up. It's not that the work was hard or that it went well, I wasn't able to enjoy the spotlight when projects were a success."

In the same episode of Pinggyego, Gong Yoo added that feeling anxious was a bizarre experience for him. It made him feel like he was floating in the air like clouds without any emotions. He added that going through mental struggles himself, he became more empathetic toward others, so much so that it could even be considered being nosy. He does not want anyone else to go through anxiety like he did. Gong Yoo also added:
"It's hard to say this openly. It should be a time when other people would be so happy they feel like they're floating in the clouds, but if I say that my heart felt strange, it feels like I'm not grateful. After going through a hard time like that, the way I look at people around me changed. I felt like I was more nosy in that I didn't want them to go through the same hurt."
Mental Health struggles are real, and Gong Yoo has again proved that anyone can go through it regardless of professional dynamics. Let us know your views on mental health.
