Who Will Take Over Gopichand Hinduja's Business Of USD 15 Billion Empire Out Of His Three Children?

Hinduja Group Chairman and Indian-origin billionaire, Gopichand P Hinduja passed away at the age of 85 in London. He was the second sibling out of the four Hinduja brothers and took over the business after the passing of his elder brother, Srichand Hinduja, in May 2023. 

Gopichand P Hinduja is survived by his wife and three children

For the unversed, Gopichand P Hinduja died in London Hospital, as per a news agency, PTI. He was known as 'GP' in the business circles. The 85-year-old has been survived by his wife, Sunita Hinduja, two sons — Sanjay and Dheeraj, and a daughter, Rita. He became part of his family business when he was in Mumbai in 1959. It won't be wrong to say that his leadership and business ideas evolved the Hinduja Group from a trading firm into a USD 20 billion multinational conglomerate.

Talking about his educational qualifications, Gopichand P Hinduja completed his graduation from Bombay's Jai Hind College in 1959. He also held an Honorary Doctorate of Law from the University of Westminster and an Honorary Doctorate of Economics from Richmond College in London. 

Gopichand Hinduja was the one who made the acquisition of Gulf Oil easy in 1984, and it was a significant business move. Later, they acquired Ashok Leyland's a struggling major player of the Indian automobile sector in 1987. It was the first major NRI investment in India at that time. He was the one who led his business into the power and infrastructure sectors. 

Gopichand Hinduja's net worth

Gopichand Hinduja was considered the richest man in the United Kingdom for seven years straight. As per the UK Sunday Times Rich List released in May 2025, he topped the chart with a net worth of 35.304 billion British pounds, which is estimated to be around Rs. 33,67,948 crore. According to Forbes, Gopichand's net worth as of August 2025 is around USD 20.6 billion.

Who is going to take over his business after his death?

The Hinduja Group, which is valued at around USD 15 billion, is left with two remaining brothers, Prakash Hinduja and Ashok Hinduja. They both have been important pillars of the conglomerate. While Prakash Hinduja manages the group's European operations, Ashok Hinduja looks after the Indian arm. Their role is significant in these times of a shift in the position. While it is not clear if Gopichand Hinduja's children will take the position, the family has planned a careful succession structure designed to balance stability within the family with generational renewal. 

They have made an arrangement by introducing younger family members being given newer responsibilities as they take on new complex roles in the changing market dynamics. After Gopichand P Hinduja, the business will be led by Prakash P Hinduja. Talking about Gopichand's children, his son, Dheeraj Hinduja, is the chairperson of Ashok Leyland. On the other hand, Sanjay Hinduja leads Gulf Oil International.
