Bollywood has seen many stars who rule millions of hearts but vanish from the spotlight after a period of time. Govinda is one of the few actors whose stardom has only multiplied. He has been enjoying a similar stardom to the one he had during the peak of his career. Govinda, the OG style icon and dancer, was one of the top-paid actors in Bollywood in the late 80s and early 90s.
Born on December 21, 1963, to the actor, Arun Kumar Ahuja and actress, Nirmala Devi, Govinda is fondly called ‘Chi Chi’ by his fans and industry mates. In a career span of more than three decades, Govinda has appeared in more than 165 Hindi films. He has proved his versatility as an actor in films like Dulhe Raja, Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, Partner, Bhagam Bhag, and many more.
Talking about his personal life, the actor is married to Sunita Munjal, and the couple is the proud parents of Tina Ahuja and Yashvardhan Ahuja. Govinda and Sunita have been hitting the headlines off-late after rumours of a tiff in their happy married life surfaced on social media handles. It has been speculated that Govinda and Sunita are heading for divorce after 37 years of marriage.
While there is no confirmation of this, let us tell you that Sunita has been Govinda’s constant support throughout his career. From supporting his decision to cheering the loudest on his success, she has seen the actor’s highs and lows. Do you know there was a time when Govinda’s successful career hit a low?
Govinda’s major hits were in the comedy genre, and his comic timing was impeccable. Among all his heroines, his pairing with Karisma Kapoor was loved by the audience. The film featured Karisma Kapoor and Sushmita Sen in the lead. As per multiple reports, Govinda rejected the film as he did not want to work with Sushmita. However, this mistake proved to be fatal for Govinda’s career. The role which was written for Govinda initially went to Salman Khan. After the release, the film became a superhit, and Salman Khan got all the limelight, and his career gained momentum.
The film was made on a budget of Rs. 12 crores and earned Rs. 41.6 crores worldwide. On the other hand, Govinda’s career would witness a downfall. After 1999, Govinda gave only two hits and a few average ones. Apart from this, almost all of his films turned out to be a disaster, and his career started fading away. Soon, Govinda’s films stopped working.
After the release of Biwi No. 1, there were rumours of a feud between Govind and David Dhawan. The actor-director duo has also collaborated in 17 films, including Hero No.1, Coolie No.1, Raja Babu, Partner, Deewana Mastana and many others. Despite being one of the most successful pairs with David Dhawan, Govinda once felt upset with the former. As per reports, Govinda was upset when David started working with other actors, such as Salman Khan and Sanjay Dutt.
Not just this, there were reports that the duo hit a rough patch after their last movie, Do Not Disturb, in 2009. Reportedly, the actor was upset when Govinda said he had given Dhawan the idea to make Chashme Baddoor in 2009. However, the director went ahead and took Rishi Kapoor. It was in 2015 when Govinda revealed he had distanced himself from Dhawan. In his words:
"No, I don’t want to work with David Dhawan, as he didn’t stand by me during my bad patch."
