Halloween isn't just a festival in the United States; it's a cultural spectacle for all Americans. Every year in October, America turns into a creativity fest as people showcase their spooky costumes. While the entire country celebrates it with great enthusiasm, people also eagerly await snippets from Hollywood's star-studded parties.
Every year, we see so many celebrities organizing Halloween parties and breaking headlines with their super-creative costumes that draw on surreal pop references. In recent years, we have seen film industries in countries such as India, Japan, China, Nigeria, and the UK following Hollywood's lead and organizing celebrity Halloween nights. While on one side, Hollywood's glamorous Halloween nights never fail to disappoint, they've also received huge criticism and backlash in the past.

Over the years, we have seen so many celebrities crossing the lines of religion, race, disability, and tragic events with their outfits, triggering and mocking their sentiments. Today, we are going to take a look at some of the most disturbing and controversial Halloween outfits worn by Hollywood celebrities in history.

Julianne Hough is a popular singer, dancer, actress, and two-time champion on Dancing with the Stars. At the 2013 Halloween party, she dressed as Orange Is the New Black character, "Suzanne 'Crazy Eyes' Warren", a black character played by Uzo Aduba. She was criticised for her blatant blackface makeup and being insensitive towards the US history of racial impersonation.

During the 2017 Halloween party, Kim Kardashian received heavy backlash for dressing as the late iconic R&B singer, Aaliyah. Kardashian's costume was inspired by Aaliyah's outfit from the latter's music video, Try Again. While Kardashian clearly stated that she wanted to pay homage to the iconic singer, people criticised her for cultural appropriation and found her costume disrespectful.

The Real Housewives of New York City fame, Luann de Lesseps, appeared in a costume depicting famous singer, Diana Ross, for a Halloween party in 2017. However, her makeup left people furious, who lashed out at Luann for blackface because her skin tone appeared significantly darkened in photos.

Real Housewives of Atlanta star, Kenya Moore, decided to wear a Native American-style headdress and costume for Bravo Network's 2021 Halloween party, and it brought her widespread criticism for appropriating Indigenous cultural symbols without respect.
Popular food writer and chef Alison Roman was criticised after her 2008 Myspace photo from a Halloween party surfaced online in June 2020. Alison's costume referenced "chola" style, which was considered by many as a negative stereotype of Latina women.

Popular actor and comedian, David Walliams, impersonated North Korean leader, Kim Jong-un, for the 2017 Halloween party. Walliams was condemned as "yellow-face" and criticised for his mocking portrayal of Asian features.

In 2018, Olympian Shaun White dressed up for a Halloween party as the fictional mentally disabled character 'Simple Jack' from the film, Tropic Thunder. The Olympic gold-medallist snowboarder received criticism from the Special Olympics Committee, which labeled his costume as offensive and insensitive.
Khloe Kardashian was spotted wearing a controversial 'pimp' at a Halloween nightclub in 2003. Years later, the photos surfaced on the internet in 2022, and Khloe was criticised for her Halloween costume. People were shocked to see a white woman leading Black women on leashes, citing the heartwrenching racial implications related to slavery in American history.
In 2012, Chris Brown shocked everyone by dressing up as a Taliban member for a Halloween party. The singer and his friends carried robes, fake beards, imitation assault rifles, and bullet belts. Chris was criticised heavily for glorifying violence and promoting an extremist group.

In 2008, Heidi Klum sparked global controversy after her elaborate blue-skinned Kali costume offended devotees of the Goddess Kali. People questioned her maturity for turning a sacred goddess into a spooky outfit.
Country star, Jason Aldean created a stir in Hollywood when he wore blackface to imitate popular rapper and singer, Lil Wayne at a Halloween party in 2015. Jason received heavy criticism for disrespecting the Black culture.
In 2016, Hilary Duff and her then-boyfriend, Jason Walsh, landed in a major controversy after dressing as a pilgrim and a Native American chief for a Halloween party. The couple later apologized for romanticizing colonization and cultural insensitivity.
Former NBA star and actor, Dwight Howard, disappointed his fans and others when he dressed as a homeless man for a Halloween party in 2012. Despite being involved with a foundation that supports homeless people, it was shocking for people to see him like this.
In 2006, iconic comedian, Bill Maher broke everyone's hearts and received heavy backlash after he dressed up as the late Steve Irwin for a Halloween party, just weeks after the conservationist's demise due to a fatal stingray accident. Bill's Halloween costume even included a stingray barb protruding from his chest, leaving everyone shocked.
During a Halloween party in 2005, Prince Harry was spotted wearing a Nazi uniform, a Swastika armband, holding a drink and a cigarette in his fingers. The pictures from the Halloween party sparked a major scandal for the Royal Family, causing global outrage, and Prince Harry had to issue an apology to cool the controversy.

For the uninitiated, when you say the name loud, it sounds like "see more bush", which is a crude adult pun.
