'Hamilton' Movie Theatrical Release: Original Cast's Fees Revealed From Highest To Lowest Paid Actor

Hamilton: An American Musical is one of the most iconic Broadway musicals, which popularly combines the story of earlier America told through the lens and music culture of today's America. The musical is inspired by the 2004 biography with the same name, written on Founding Father Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow. Lin-Manuel Miranda, who is the writer of the musical and also plays the titular character, incorporates hip-hop, R&B and more modern-day music genres into the story.

Hamilton also sends across a powerful message by reimagining how American history would have played out if the Founding Fathers and other early leaders were people of colour. With its unique storytelling and impact, the musical has not only won 11 Tony Awards, but it has also broken box office records, making the original cast very rich. As the Hamilton movie is set for a theatrical release, and the original cast will be seen on cinemas, here's a look at how much the original cast earned.

Lin-Manuel Miranda, who played 'Hamilton', earned the most

Lin-Manuel Miranda plays a significant role in bringing the book Hamilton to the stage. He is also the only writer and lyricist of the play. As a result, he takes home a 7% cut from the approx USD 1.5 million that Hamilton roughly makes each week, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter. So, he made USD 105,000 from royalties. Adding to that, the actor's salary that Lin-Manuel also received before he left Hamilton in 2016, roughly amounted to USD 130,000 a year, a report by Money.com stated.

Phillipa Soo's salary, who played the role of 'Eliza Hamilton'

As per a report by the Stylecaster, each cast member of Hamilton made at least USD 3,400 a week. Bloomberg also reported in 2016 that the Hamilton cast had unionised to make sure that they received one per cent of net profits from the New York and other U.S.A. shows. Hence, adding this, each actor and actress would have been paid USD 18,400 per week for the New York show alone. Out of the 22 cast members who received 1% of the royalties, Phillipa Soo was one as well.

Leslie Odom Jr., who plays 'Aaron Burr', led the cast to get share in royalties

Leslie Odom Jr., who received the Tony for Outstanding Actor in a Musical for his portrayal of Vice President Aaron Burr, was reported to be one of the crew members who took the initiative to get the original Hamilton cast paid more after its widespread success. Hence, the actor also made at least USD 18,400 per week.

Renee Elise Goldsberry's salary, who played 'Angelica Schuyler'

Renee Elise Goldsberry plays the role of Alexander Hamilton's sister-in-law. As per reports, the actress also led the negotiations for a cut in net profits. As a result, she was also one of the 22 cast members who received a minimum of USD 18,400 per week. Renee has received a Tony Award, a Grammy, among many other accolades.

Daveed Diggs's salary, who plays two roles in Hamilton

Daveed Diggs played the role of 'Marquis de Lafayette', a French officer who fought in the American Revolutionary War. He also essayed the role of former U.S. President and one of the Founding Fathers, Thomas Jefferson. Daveed also won a Tony for Outstanding Featured Actor in a Musical for his role. The actor is one of the 22 cast members who earned at least USD 18,400 per week. Daveed had also supported his colleagues when they wrote a letter to the show producers, demanding a cut in the royalty.

Okieriete Onaodowan's salary, who originated the role of 'Hercules Mulligan'

Okieriete Onaodowan played the role of 'Hercules Mulligan', an Irish spy during the American Revolutionary War. The actor also received a minimum of USD 18,400 per week. As per a Bloomberg report, Okieriete has refused to perform Hamilton's Ham4Ham shows until the cast got one per cent of royalties. In an email exchange obtained by the media portal, the actor said to the cast:

“I just know that it’s hard for me to separate Ham4Ham from the overall theme of compensation for our worth. I feel as if I shouldn’t do them, and would love to graciously let Lin know until this 1% is resolved it’s hard to do a Ham4Ham because it isn’t vital to the life of the show.”

Salaries of Anthony Ramos and Jasmine Cephas Jones

Anthony Ramos plays two roles in the musical. He plays the role of a soldier during the American Revolutionary War and also portrayed 'Phillip Hamilton', the eldest son of Alexander Hamilton. Jasmine Cephas Jones also plays two roles. One as 'Peggy Schuyler', Alexander Hamilton's sister-in-law. And the other character she essays is that of 'Maria Reynolds', his mistress. It is unclear whether both these artists are included in the 22 cast members who received the royalty cut or not. However, given that they are also part of the original cast, there is a high possibility that they also earned USD 18,400 per week.
