'Happy Gilmore 2' Early Reviews: Adam Sandler Revives His Cult-Classic Role After Three Decades

However, the wait has been excruciatingly long as it took the makers almost 30 years to bring 'Happy Gilmore' back to the audience. The film will reunite the original cast, including Christopher McDonald as the arrogant golfer 'Shooter McGavin' and Julie Bowen as 'Virginia Venit', Happy's now-wife. While the film received mixed reviews from critics in 1996, it became a commercial success, earning a cult following and grossing USD 41.2 million at the box office. The film was made on a USD 12 million budget.

Well, the excitement for Happy Gilmore 2 has been through the roof. While fans have been on the edge about the return of the film after 30 years, the early reviews suggest that the fans are absolutely loving it. According to Rotten Tomatoes, a user penned, "I promise you will not be disappointed leaving this movie. It’s absolutely hilarious!!!" Another wrote, "Happy Gilmore 2 was a blast from start to finish, Adam Sandler with hilarious. I figure if it comes out on DVD, I'll get it. You need to see it on Netflix." A comment read, "I am going to love it regardless and probably watch it a second time during the weekend."

However, not all were happy with the film. A user penned, "This movie was like finally getting the shot with the girl you always wanted, and then when it comes time, you just go soft, it sucked badly except MJF's part, but that's cause he's better than you and you know it!!" Another wrote, "Sandler's style of comedy just doesn't work its magic like it used to. Disappointed but had to watch it for the culture, would rather have spent the time rewatching the old."

Regarding when and where Happy Gilmore fans can enjoy the sequel, the film is available to stream on Netflix starting July 25, 2025. The film will be released at 3 am (EST) and around midnight (Pacific Time). The OTT giant will be bringing back the hilarious magic of the hot-headed golfer. However, will the audience relate to a story which ended 30 years ago? Only time and fan reviews will tell. The makers have decided not to have a theatrical release for the film at this time.

Happy Gilmore 2 will be bringing back the original cast from 1996. According to Netflix, Adam Sandler will return as 'Happy Gilmore', whereas Julie Bowen will mark the return of former PGA Tour public relations director and 'Happy's' wife, 'Virginia Venit'. Christopher McDonald will return as 'Shooter McGavin', 'Happy's' biggest golf rival and a rude and hot-headed champion. The role of the nursing home orderly, 'Hal L.' who exaggerates about the way 'Happy's' grandmother was treated at a retirement home will be essayed by Ben Stiller. 

Additionally, the film will also bring Philip Schneider as 'Bobby', Maxwell Friedman as 'Gordie', Ethan Cutkosky as 'Wayne', Conor Sherry as 'Terry', and John Daly as himself. However, there are not only old members in the film, but some new faces who are on a mission to woo the audience. The film will also mark the presence of Bad Bunny, Blake Clark, Margaret Qualley, Sunny Sandler, Sadie Sandler, Dennis Dugan, and Benny Safdie.

Happy Gilmore 2 has a big surprise for the Sandler family fans

The film, Happy Gilmore 2, will also feature Adam Sandler's daughters, Sadie Sandler, 19, and Sunny Sandler, 19, whom he shares with his wife, Jackie. Both have appeared in their father's movies over the years in small parts, such as Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation, Grown Ups, and Hustle. Sadie Sandler served in the lead role in You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah, which also starred her sister, Sunny Sandler.
