Haq, the courtroom drama starring Emraan Hashmi and Yami Gautam, has become the talk of the town. The film has recently released on Netflix. The film is inspired by the landmark case of Shah Bano, a Muslim woman who fought against her husband, Mohammed Ahmed Khan, a reputed lawyer of Indore. Directed by Suparn S. Varma, the film was released theatrically on November 7, 2025. Now that the courtroom has landed on OTT, the Haq director opened up about the public's reactions post the digital premiere.
In a recent interview with Bollywood Hungama, Haq director Suparn S. Varma opened up about the public's reactions following the OTT release. For the uninitiated, Haq released on Netflix on January 2, 2026. Suparn shared that he woke up to the messages and DMs from the audience who watched the courtroom drama soon after it was dropped at midnight. He mentioned that since the OTT release, his phone hasn’t stopped ringing. He highlighted that, with the OTT giant platform Netflix, Haq has reached a global audience. He called the response 'overwhelming'. He was quoted as saying:
"Now that Haq is streaming on Netflix, I woke up to messages and DMs from people who watched it right at the midnight drop. Since then, my phone hasn’t stopped ringing. With Netflix, the film has reached audiences across the world, and the response has been truly overwhelming. People have been incredibly effusive in their appreciation not just for the film, but also for the writing and the performances by Emraan and Yami. The emotional reactions I’ve received have been deeply moving."

On November 9, 2025, Yami Gautam took to her X (formerly Twitter) handle and highlighted receiving positive reviews after Haq’s theatrical release. She opened up about the power of word of mouth. She shared how the audience and the industry have been responding after Haq released in theatres. She mentioned it is a rare moment in her life. The note shared by her can be read as:
"The power of 'Word of mouth'. No foul-play or any gimmicks. Straight from our hearts to the audience. Even from a trade & media perspective, I feel a lot of positivity that they want a film like 'HAQ' to be a success. It’s a rarity & I shall cherish this moment for life."

Haq is a fictionalised version of the Mohd. Ahmed Khan vs. Shah Bano Begum case, which is widely known as the Shah Bano case. It is based on the book, Bano: Bharat ki Beti, written by Jigna Vora. Yami Gautam played the role of Shah Bano, and her character name is 'Shazia Bano'; Emraan Hashmi played the role of Shah Bano’s husband, Mohammed Ahmed Khan and his character name is 'Abbas'. In the film, 'Abbas' and 'Shazia' have three children. However, in real life, Shah Bano shared five children, three sons and two daughters with her husband, Mohd. Ahmed Khan.

In real life, Mohd. Ahmed Khan married twice. His second wife was 14 years younger than him. However, when the two women fought over trivial matters, Ahmed gave triple talaq to Shah Bano. He not only abandoned her but also their five children. Later, he was not keen to provide maintenance to his former wife. According to a report by Quint, Shah Bano became devastated after her divorce at the age of 60. She also developed high blood pressure and frequently fell ill.
