'Mrs.' Producer Harman Baweja On SIFF's 'Toxic Feminism' Remark, 'I'm Way Past Infuriated Stage...'

Sanya Malhotra's Mrs. is making waves online, receiving praises for her authentic portrayal of a homemaker's struggles. Several netizens found it relatable, while others appreciated it for highlighting key issues in the treatment of women in our society. However, there is a specific section of the audience, including a few organisations like SIFF (Save India Family Foundation) that believes that the movie has exaggerated the struggles of a housewife and promoting 'toxic feminism' in society. In a recent interview, the film's producer, Harman Baweja, reacted to these claims.

Harman Baweja says he is hardly 'infuriated' over SIFF's comments

A men's rights organisation, Save Indian Family Foundation (SIFF), recently shared elaborate notes on X criticising Sanya Malhotra starrer Mrs.'s plot. The allegations led to a debate online, and the film's producer, Harman Baweja, recently sat down for an interview with News 18 India, responding to those claims. He revealed that he had already crossed the stage where he would be angry over such a statement. Explaining how he understands every household is different, Harman said:

"I'm way past the infuriated stage now. It will take a lot to infuriate me. Maybe that section of men is looking at this film as a solution and saying that this is the exact representation of all men, which isn't necessarily true. If a film has a male and female character, it doesn't mean all men and women are like that. Every house is unique. The fragrance, the etiquette, and the way food is served in every household will be different."

Harman Baweja highlighted that one must see the film with empathy, not just in connection to their life. He explained that Mrs. is a story of 'Richa' in the film, and many women regularly face the challenges showcased in the movie and can relate to it. At the same time, some other women from a more evolved household won't connect to it. Yet, they can understand it by relating it to someone else's story they know. So, that empathy is more significant. Harman also shared an example of his bond with his wife, Sasha Ramchandani and said:

"I have a different perspective on it. The essence of the film is to respect each other for what we bring to the table. I love and respect my wife; she loves and respects me for what I bring to the table. We've just had two kids, and her hands are full. And she's a health coach. If I've to come in at some point when she has got back-to-back calls, I'll do that. The same goes for her. If I have a hard day at work and she puts food on the table for me, I'll appreciate it. It will become a problem if she has to do it for me out of no choice."

What did SIFF say about Mrs.?

Save Indian Family Foundation (SIFF) took to their X handle and issued a long statement where they called out Mrs. for showcasing that doing household for a happy woman is like oppression. They also accused the makers of promoting 'toxic feminism' through the film. The post read:

"What stress does a woman feel while chopping vegetables, cooking food on a gas stove, or doing dishes wearing gloves? Zero. Nothing. In fact, cooking is like a meditation. It is highly stressful to press clothes or do laundry in a washing machine?"
