Why Hema Malini And Dharmendra Lived Separately Despite Getting Married? 'Fingers Were Pointed..'

The entire nation is mourning the demise of veteran actor, Dharmendra. The actor passed away in Mumbai at the age of 89, but the way he lived, he never once showed that he was aging to his fans. In fact, his way of living was larger than life. When not shooting, the actor lived away from the hustle-bustle of city life at his farmhouse.

Talking about his personal life, Dharmendra had been married twice. He had two wives and six children. While his second wedding with Hema Malini created a lot of chaos at his home and in the media, the two made sure to mend things in their own beautiful way. Hema Malini once revealed the reason for not staying with Dharmendra.

Why did Hema Malini never live with Dharmendra despite being married to him?

Dharmendra and Hema Malini were the hit pair of Bollywood. It was during the countless shootings and outdoor scenes that Hema Malini and Dharmendra fell in love. While Hema Malini did her best to stay away from already-married Dharmendra, she couldn't resist his love for her. The two got married in 1980 despite Dharmendra being already married to Prakash Kaur. 

However, to avoid hurting anyone and to keep the peace in the Deol family, Hema Malini and Dharmendra chose to live separately. In the actress' biography, Hema Malini: Beyond The Dream Girl, the actress revealed that she didn't want to disturb anyone, and she was happy to have all the things Dharmendra did for her and her daughter. Hema Malini's decision was an act of respect towards Dharmendra's first wife, Prakash Kaur, and his children. Hema Malini also talked about the judgment and labels she received of being 'the other woman'. She said:

"Fingers were pointed. Accusations were flung at us. I knew people discussed me behind my back. I just knew that he made me happy. And all I wanted was happiness."

Talking about her wedding setup and feeling alone. She straight away revealed that she doesn't need to keep a tab on him and note how many days he visits her. She stated that Dharmendra always knew his role as a father and she never had to remind him of it. She mentioned:

"I am not a police officer who needs to keep tabs on him. I don’t need to show people a roll-call register of how many days he visits me. He knows his duty as a father, and I’ve never had to remind him of it."

Hema Malini once talked about her living condition with Dharmendra after her children grew up

In a 2023 interview for Lehren Retro, Hema Malini talked about her living condition with Dharmendra. She accepted that nobody wants to be like that, but it happened to her. And she accepted it, but nobody wants to live their life like this.

Hema Malini further revealed that every woman wants to have a husband and children and live like a normal family, but it was not in her way. However, she doesn't sulk about it and is happy. She was quoted as saying:

"Every woman wants to have a husband, children, like a normal family. But somewhere, it went out of the way… I am not feeling bad about it, or sulking about it. I am happy with myself. I have my two children, and I have brought them up very well."
