Veteran actress, Hema Malini needs no introduction. Hailed as the Dream Girl of Bollywood, the actress has proved her mettle in acting and her versatility in many movies. Hema made her acting debut in Hindi films with the film, Sapno Ka Saudagar, opposite Raj Kapoor. Later, she went on to act in many Hindi movies, including Baghban, Sholay, Seeta Aur Geeta, and many others. And now, in an interview, the actress opened up about her early days in Bollywood.
In an interview with Lehren Retro, Hema Malini opened up about her initial acting career and revealed that her projects were largely managed by her mother, Jaya Chakravarthy. Talking about the same, the actress told that her mother wanted her to experience fame and success like never-seen-before through Hema's glorifying career. Hema further shared that she came from an orthodox family, so she had drawn certain lines for her roles in the films.

In the same interview, Hema Malini talked about romancing Raj Kapoor, who was in his 40s, in the film, Sapno Ka Saudagar, while she was just a teenager at the time. Elaborating on the same, the Dream Girl of Bollywood admitted that though she felt uncomfortable being cast opposite the 'Greatest Showman' in the film, she couldn't question it. However, she mentioned that the film's director, Mahesh Kaul, helped her through the whole situation by explaining the emotions behind the scene through the language of dance and making things easier for her.
When the actress was asked if she ever noticed the age gap between her and Raj Kapoor, she gave an affirmative response. Moreover, she added that she knew that she had got an important opportunity, so she focused on the positive side more than anything else. Hema further shared that she only saw Raj Kapoor as an actor and that he was the perfect choice for the character. However, she admitted that she was scared in the beginning and that shooting a romantic scene with him was extremely difficult.

In the same interview, Hema Malini mentioned that she had certain limitations while working on a project and everybody in the film industry knew about them. Recalling how even Raj Kapoor, who first offered her a role in Satyam Shivam Sundaram, himself was apprehensive that she wouldn't do the role when he approached her for the role, Hema revealed that her mother strictly said 'No' to it. In her words:
“Raj Kapoor came to me and asked me to do Satyam Shivam Sundaram. But he only said, ‘This is such a film and I don’t feel you would do it. But I am very keen that you should do it. But I know you will not do it.' So my mother is also sitting and says, ‘No, she will not do all that’."
