Amitabh Bachchan-Hema Malini starrer film, Baghban has for many reasons, has been considered a classic piece of filmography in Bollywood. Well, while the special ensemble star cast of the film was definitely a reason, it was in more ways than one that the film’s narrative touched the hearts of the cine lovers. Moreover, the perfect dialogues, melodious soundtracks and just the phenomenal standards of acting put forth by each of the stars simply made it one of the most-loved films, even today. And now, as the film clocked 20 years, Hema Malini shared some fond anecdotes about the film.
In a recent interaction with the Hindustan Times, Hema Malini spilled beans on working in the film, Baghban. The iconic actress mentioned that back at that point of time, she wasn’t doing a lot of films and had refused quite a few. Moreover, she added that when the filmmaker, Ravi Chopra narrated Baghban’s script to her, she wasn’t sure to say yes, as she was apprehensive about playing a mother to four grown-up children. She mentioned:
“I was not doing too many films at that point, I had reduced the number. Actually, I was just not doing anything. That is when Ravi Chopra came to me and narrated this subject. I was not convinced because I had to play a mother to four elderly boys. I was feeling very awkward main aisa kaise karun, maine aise mother ka role kabhi kiya hi nahi kisi film mein.”

However, Hema Malini did end up doing the film, and winning a lot of appreciation and accolades for the same. Ask the 74-year-old actress as to what made the change of her mind, the diva mentions how her mother convinced her to do the role, with the example of Amitabh Bachchan. In her words:
“Then my mother said if Amitabh Bachchan is doing it, then you can also do it, no problem. He is opposite you. I said yes.”
In one of her previous revelations, Hema Malini was asked about the frequent rumours of her husband, Dharmendra having not watched her film, Baghban opposite Amitabh Bachchan, apparently due to the reason of their special chemistry in the film. To this, the diva gave a witty reply, and mentioned that she wasn’t sure of any such bit of news.

In another of her earlier interviews, Hema Malini was asked about her plans of making a comeback in films, to which she replied that she was ready. However, highlighting the type of roles that she would want to do, Hema mentioned that it should be appropriate to her age, even if it meant a glamorous one.
