Bollywood actress, Hema Malini is known for her amazing acting skills. She is one of the gorgeous ladies of cinema, who gained fame with her accolades on the silver screen. The entire nation hails her as a 'Dream Girl'. However, the gorgeous superstar of films fell head-over-heels in love with Dharmendra.
The epitome of beauty in the Hindi cinema, Hema Malini, had broken many hearts when tied the knot with the action hero, Dharmendra on May 2, 1980. However, she had gone through a lot, when she had decided to spend her life with already married Dharmendra.
Not many know Hema Malini was once in a relationship with the late actor, Sanjeev Kumar. However, their relationship had ended on a sour note. They were about to get married as their families had also accepted them. But Sanjeev's family wantedwant a working wife for him, leading the couple's separation.
In a 1991 interview with Bhawna Somaaya, Hema had revealed that Sanjeev wanted a homely wife. The actress had also shared that he looked down upon the women from the acting profession. The actress had said:
"Sanjeev Kumar desired a stay-at-home, all-sacrificing wife who would care for his ageing mother and support him, while he mesmerized the audience and won accolades, seems like a caricature of a male chauvinist. But before judging him too harshly, let’s consider the era we are dealing with. Back in the day, it was common to look down upon women who chose to be a part of showbiz."
Hema had further added that this was one of the prime reasons why he wasn't able to get married. His notions regarding the woman of the house were orthodox, and the new-age woman doesn't think that way. Hema had shared:
"A ‘good woman’ and a ‘good wife’ was a woman who chose her family over herself and her career, a tireless homemaker who helped her husband reach the pinnacle of success — rubbed oil in her mother-in-law’s hair, taught her daughter good manners and helped her son with his homework. Times have changed and women are liberated from this unfair burden. The truth is that an ‘ideal woman’ or, for that matter, an ‘ideal man’ is a myth, and perhaps this is the reason Sanjeev Kumar could not settle down in his lifetime. The perfectionist in him searched for the perfect woman — who frankly doesn’t exist"
Coming back to Dharmendra Deol and Hema Malini's love story, they are an inspiration for many till today. It was in the '70s when he was head-over-heels in love with Hema Malini. In the beginning, the actress had not reciprocated his feelings as she had never wanted to get involved with a married man, but she couldn't avoid his love for long and gave in.
On the work front, Hema Malini is currently working as the MP from Mathura!
