'High Potential' S2 Review: 'Morgan' And 'Karadec' Turn ABC's Crime Drama Into Its Smartest Game Yet

ABC's High Potential ended its debut season on a thrilling edge with two major cliffhangers that had set the stage for bigger drama. Firstly, the mysterious serial killer known as the 'Game Maker' managed to escape and taunted 'Morgan Gillory' with a clue that his dangerous game was far from over. Simultaneously, the long-running mystery of his missing ex, 'Roman Sinquerra', took a shocking turn when she learned that he was alive. Finally, after a long wait, Season 2 has picked up the story from where it was left in a dark and high-stakes game.

High Potential Season 2 Review: Will 'Morgan' and Karadec's find 'Game Maker' and her ex, 'Roman'?

High Potential Season 2 wastes no time in raising the tension. The show's two-part premiere witnesses the comeback of 'Morgan' and the LAPD Major Crimes team. Together, they try to track down the 'Game Maker', a killer unlike any Morgan has faced before. While she managed to outsmart the majority of the killers she faced earlier, he is new. Unlike others, his focus is not on revenge or crime, but on creating puzzles.

'Game Maker' can match 'Morgan's sharp intelligence, making him even more dangerous for them. On the other hand, her personal life is at risk, and she fears for the safety of her children. She has to briefly step away from work, while her teammate 'Oz' continues to remain traumatised from nearly being drowned in the Season 1 finale.

High Potential Season 2 Review: Is the new season worth the wait?

Overall, the second season of High Potential manages to strike a balance between the crime-of-the-week cases with the ongoing story arc of the 'Game Maker' that brings a lot of thrilling moments. Twists arrive one after another, pushing 'Morgan' and 'Karadec' to their limits in their pursuit of justice. However, the subplot involving 'Roman's return risks feels a little too familiar and matches the old beats from Season 1. Still, the weekly mysteries are strong enough to keep audiences hooked. The third episode gives a shocking conclusion and reminds us why this series is unlike any other crime drama. There is no compromise on humour amid the heavy tone of the new tone. However, the highlight of the new season is 'Morgan' and 'Karadec's banter, trust, and bonding.
