Popular Indian actress and an amazing screenwriter, Honey Irani recently shared her story of falling in love and getting proposed by Javed Akhtar during a heartfelt interview with Filmfare. In the interview, she spoke about falling in love on the sets of Seeta Aur Geeta, and recalled the game of cards, which led to an iconic and sweet proposal by her husband, Javed Akhtar. Without any further ado, let's dive into their proposal incident.
Honey Irani in a podcast by Filmfare, called In The Ring, where she very fondly recalled the beginning of her love story with Javed Akhtar. A love story that blossomed on the sets of Seeta Aur Geeta, where he was working as a dialogue writer along with Salim Khan. Honey was a young popular actress, while Javed was just making a name for himself in the industry. She started by sharing that during a break, they were playing a card game, where Javed was losing and he jokingly asked Honey to pick up a card. When she did, it turned out to be the winning card for him and a happy Javed said:
"You are so lucky for me, I think I should marry you."
What looked like just a random comment, turned out to be something more beautiful than imagined. Gradually, the bond started to grow. Honey shared that their bond wasn’t built on grand things but was built on daily conversations, filled with laughter, support and a lot of comfort. She also mentioned that they dated for about 7-8 months.
Javed Akhtar’s friend and writing partner, Salim Khan played an important role in getting Honey Irani’s mother's approval. In the podcast, Honey Irani mentioned that Salim Khan knew how her mother would react and how to take the proposal to her. So, he approached her on behalf of Javed. Honey humorously recalled that when Salim Khan went, her mother refused for the marriage by saying she is very young and it's high time she focuses on her career. Salim Khan agreed with her and said, “I also feel that because Javed doesn’t have a house, doesn’t earn a lot and has a drinking problem”. Interestingly, hearing this, Honey’s mother agreed for the marriage saying, “If there are so many issues, let them get married, she will come home in one month. Uske sar pe jo bhoot chada hai, wo khatam ho jayega.”
Honey Irani and Javed Akhtar tied the knot in the early 1970s, shortly after their film, Seeta Aur Geeta. Their marriage was a union of two very creative minds, Honey was a young actress, while Javed was an upcoming screenwriter. During their marriage, the couple had two children- Farhan Akhtar and Zoya Akhtar, both of them are one of the celebrated celebs in the Bollywood industry.

However, within a few years, the couple started facing issues. Javed Akhtar started to develop a relationship with the actress, Shabana Azmi, which became one of the reasons for his separation with Honey Irani. The couple officially got divorced in 1985. Honey Irani spoke about the challenges she had to face, especially because she was raising two children and despite her personal challenges, she managed to make a path for herself as a respected screenwriter. In the interview with Filmfare, Honey Irani mentioned that their separation wasn’t just because of a third person, they already were facing issues and somewhere knew that the marriage was going to end.

In the heartfelt and fun podcast with Filmfare, Honey Irani spoke about a lot of things. From the sweet and fun proposal to talking about her separation from Javed Akhtar, she shared a lot about her personal life. She also shared things about her child, Farhan Akhtar and spoke about starting screenwriting. She spoke about Farhan's childhood and said, "Usko maar bohot padi hai, matlab hafte mein 3 baar mujhe usse hospital le jana padhta tha." She spoke about working with Hrithik Roshan on Kaho Na.. Pyaar Hai, and said, "He was a pleasure to work with, he never said can we improve my side." She also shared how Javed Akhtar encouraged her to start screenwriting. While talking the same, she said:
“He (Javed sahab) found my book (of short stories) and said, this is good, why are you hiding this. You please carry on because this is really good.”
