Reality TV star Masika Kalysha is devastated at the tragic passing of her estranged husband and the loving father of one of her kids, Jamar Champ. The former athlete and businessman was in a car with a fellow rider when he got into a devastating car accident in Houston. He was only 38.
The Love & Hip Hop: Hollywood alum confirmed the tragic news on X, sharing the heart-wrenching revelation and asking her followers to pray for her and her children. Her post came just hours after reports surfaced that Champ had been killed in a fiery collision on the Katy Freeway, Houston.

Kalysha and Champ share a child together, and despite their years of complex relationships, the news comes as a profound loss for the reality TV star. Here’s everything to know about Jamar Champ, the tragic crash that claimed his life.

Hours after reports of a fatal crash on the Houston freeway, the identity of one of the victims was confirmed to be Jamar Champ. Shocked and devastated by the update, Kalysha took to X (formerly Twitter) to confirm it in the early hours of Tuesday, October 28, 2025 (ET). She emotionally wrote:
“God woke me up at 2:00 a.m.… I couldn’t sleep. I didn’t know why. Jesus Christ, I just received the worst news of my life. Pray for me and my kids, please.”

In another Instagram post, the reality TV star, 40, struggled to hold back tears as she asked for privacy for herself and her children during this difficult time. “I just ask respectfully that you guys refrain from posting information until I do. Because word spreads fast to children. And although my kids are on social media, a lot of their friends are, and a lot of their parents, all their parents are. And I don’t want my kids to find out at school.”
According to Houston-based news outlet KHOU 11, the fatal crash happened just after midnight on October 28, 2025 (ET), near the Washington/Wescott exit on Interstate 10. Police say it all happened due to a wrong turn when a BMW driving the wrong way collided head-on into Champ’s Tesla Cybertruck, immediately killing both drivers.

Authorities believe the BMW driver mistakenly entered the freeway through an exit ramp marked with multiple ‘Do Not Enter’ or ‘Wrong Way’ signs and drove on the wrong side. Houston Police Sergeant Rebecca Dallas said:
“At this time, we believe the BMW was headed westbound in the eastbound lanes.”
Besides his famous wife, Jamar Champ was known for his athletic background and business ventures. A former college football player, he played wide receiver for the North Dakota State Bison during the 2005-2006 season. His collegiate profile describes him as a ‘talented, speedy player’. After college, Jamar pursued various entrepreneurial opportunities. But has mostly kept a low-key profile all his life.

Jamar’s name became known worldwide after he entered a relationship with Masika, though he maintained a low profile mostly. The duo reportedly started dating in private before becoming public in 2020, when they announced their engagement. The next year, they tied the knot in a small and intimate wedding. In 2022, the couple became parents to their daughter, Amari Hermes Champ.

However, the marriage seemed to have run its course within a matter of years. After reports of a strained relationship between the two in 2023, Masika filed for an annulment in early 2024. Despite their separation, the two reportedly remained on good terms as co-parents. With Jamar’s death, it remains unclear whether the annulment was finalised before Champ’s untimely death.
Besides their young daughter, Amari, Jamar also played a vital role in raising Masika’s daughter, Khari, whom she had from her previous relationship with rapper Fetty Wap. Jamar took on a father’s role for both kids and actively helped the TV star to raise them.
Masika Kalysha rose to fame as one of the breakout stars of Love & Hip Hop: Hollywood and later appeared on Growing Up Hip Hop: Atlanta. Beyond reality TV, she has built a successful career as an entrepreneur. She is the founder of Khari Barbie Beauty, a cruelty-free cosmetics brand inspired by her daughter. Masika has often opened up about motherhood and the challenges of raising children in the public eye. Now, as she faces this unimaginable loss, fans and friends are rallying around her for support.
A family representative said funeral details for Jamar Champ will be announced soon. For now, Masika is taking time away from the spotlight to grieve privately and be with her children.
