Noelia Castillo Ramos has passed away after fighting a long battle to end her life through Spain's euthanasia laws. Her crucial decision at the age of 25 drew widespread attention and debate over the right to die and mental health. Now, her views on the disagreement within her family over their decision have come to light.
Noelia Castillo Ramos was administered life-ending medication under Spain's euthanasia law in Barcelona. According to reports from Marca and Antena 3, she died after the courts upheld her right to medically assisted death. However, the decision was not instant, and the 25-year-old fought a long battle for years against her family, who tried to stop the procedure.

Initially, her case for euthanasia was approved by a regional medical board. But it was delayed due to legal challenges. Ultimately, Spain's Supreme Court ruled in her favor in January 2026. Later, a final appeal by her family to the European Court of Human Rights was also rejected, which cleared the way for the procedure.

Noelia Castillo Ramos made the significant decision to end her life after she endured physical and emotional suffering for several years. According to local media reports, the 25-year-old's life took a turn for the worse after she was allegedly sexually assaulted and decided to end her life in 2022. But she managed to survive the same, and the incident further left her paraplegic. Noelia was bound to a wheelchair that added to her psychological distress.

According to the medical experts who evaluated her case, she met the required legal criteria for euthanasia. Noelia was a legal adult and suffered from a serious and incurable condition that caused her constant, unbearable suffering. Some reports alleged that she had tried suicide twice and consistently expressed her wish to end her life because she could no longer bear the pain.

Noelia Castillo Ramos' legal battle to seek euthanasia was not easy. Her family, especially her father, argued that her mental health condition may have influenced her choice. In contrast, her mother disagreed with the decision but decided to stay by her side until her final moments. However, Noelia decided she did not want her family by her side in her final moments, as they misunderstood her. Eventually, when asked about her family's opposition, the 25-year-old shared her exhaustion as she said:
"At last, I've managed it, so let's see if I can finally rest now. I just cannot go on anymore. None of my family is in favor of euthanasia, obviously, because I'm another pillar of the family. But what about the pain that I've suffered all of these years?"

Noelia Castillo Ramos' case has once again brought attention to Spain's euthanasia law, which was legalised in 2021. It allows adults to seek medically assisted death. But the option is only available to adults who have incurable illnesses. It is also available to someone facing some chronic conditions that are causing intolerable physical or psychological pain.
According to official guidelines, a person must submit multiple written requests and independent medical evaluations to meet the needs. Also, they need to serve a mandatory 15-day reflection period. These long-term formalities are put in place to ensure that the decision is voluntary and well-considered. Meanwhile, until the end of 2024, more than 1,100 people had undergone euthanasia in Spain.

Rest in peace, Noelia Castillo Ramos.
