Whiteheads just like blackheads is a common problem our skin battles with. Also called as comedones, they can appear almost everywhere in the skin where it has high oil secretion. Thus, they are pretty common sights to spot on chin, nose and overall face. Often triggered by bacteria, dead skin builds up or clogged pores due to oil deposit.
If your mother or father has an acne prone skin, it is quite likely that you have the same as it runs in genes. Such skin is susceptible to whiteheads and bacterial attack. However, you can still control whiteheads.

Hormonal changes can trigger every kind of acne including whiteheads. Especially, with an increase in androgens, whiteheads are natural to occur. At times, a few medicines which alter hormone levels can also cause such acne.

Once in a while makeup can be the reason behind whiteheads especially on cheeks and chin. Usually, heavy makeup, if not removed properly clog the pores, leading to skin woes. If you have whiteheads use as less makeup as possible and go for water-based, sheer and non-comedogenic cosmetics to guard against clogged pores.
Though not scientifically proven, there are opinions that too much spicy and oily food can lead to acne. So, keep a tab on what you eat.
Proper and regular face cleanup is a must, else be ready to welcome whiteheads.
Firstly, by application of topical medication that has benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid. Wash the affected area with gentle soap, pat dry it and apply the medicine. Apply twice or as prescribed on the label.
Word of caution: If you get rashes or terrible itching or develop redness, stop it immediately and consult a skin specialist. If your skin is too sensitive, it is advisable to opt for home remedies than commercial products.

It helps to open the pores and thus removes dead skin cells, oil sebum and clogged dirt. Take hot water in a large bowl and place it on a flat surface. Carefully lean your face over the bowl and cover your head with a heavy towel. Stay this way for around 5-10 minutes. Now wipe your face. Repeat it once or twice a week.
In a bowl, mix 4-5 tablespoons of powdered oatmeal, 2-3 tablespoons of yoghurt, 1 tablespoon each of honey and tablespoon of lemon juice. Evenly apply this mask on your face with special attention to the affected area. Wait for 20 minutes and rinse off with water. Repeat twice a week.
A gentle exfoliation with light scrubbing can remove whiteheads. Baking soda fits the bill, and it also balances pH levels of the skin. Make a thick paste with 1-2 tsp of baking soda with little water and apply on whiteheads. Let it settle for 3-5 minutes and wash it off with light scrubbing. Try it thrice a week.

A natural astringent and antibacterial agent, tea tree oil is a potent cure for whiteheads. To use it, take a cotton ball and dip it water and lightly squeeze it. Pour 4-5 drops of tea tree oil on it. It will dilute the oil. On the whiteheads, area dab it thoroughly and leave for half an hour. Now wash your face. Try it twice a week.
Word of caution: Don’t use the tea tree oil undiluted. Avoid it, if you have eczema.
In 2-4 tablespoons of water, mix 1-2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice. Dip a cotton ball in it and dab on whiteheads. Prefer to do this ritual in the night, as lemon turns the skin photosensitive. Leave it overnight and rinse it off in the morning. Try it once a day till you get the desired results.
As we mentioned earlier, a raise in androgen makes skin prone to whiteheads, green tea is a potent force to stop skin’s receptors against androgen. Thus, for a good skin health, consume 3-4 cups of green tea in a day. Not just drinking it, you can apply it locally as well. In a cup of warm water, steep 1 teaspoon of green tea leaves or one tea bag for 5-10 minutes. Dip a cotton ball and apply on the affected area and leave for five minutes. If using a tea bag, squeeze the extra liquid and dab on whiteheads.
